The Abenaki are the original Vermonters. Abenaki bands are in New Hampshire, Canada, and Maine, with the Western Abenaki living here in Vermont and New Hampshire and the Eastern Abenaki living in Maine. They have lived here for thousands of years, developing a culture and identity distinct from other nations. However, they came under threat in the 1600s when Europeans came to the area. Europeans stole land from Abenaki families, introduced new diseases, and changed the physical land by cutting down trees, introducing new plants and animals, and introducing new plant diseases.
