Molly Schneider “Ti Moune”
14”,8” , Clay, Tissue Paper, Watercolor paints, 2017
I got the idea from the artist Georgia O'Keeffe and the musical, Once On This Island. Many different things changed while I was working on the project. The Leaves were going to be clay, then paint, then finally tissue paper. I was going to put a face on her body but I decided against it. I want my audience to know the tree’s name is Ti Moune and that she was once a living person. She got her heart broken by the man she was in love with. Since the gods pitied her, they turned her into a tree so that she could live forever, sheltering the one she loves. I love the way it turned out. It took a long time but it was definitely worth it.
Molly Schneider “Icarus and the Sun”
22x17 colored pencils, hot glue, watercolor paint, acrylic paint and feathers
I knew I wanted to do something with Icarus because I was interested in the myth at the time. My inspiration was an artist on deviantart, Gabriel Picolo and and a mixed media artist, Ola Khomenok. At first i was going to make the wings grey with crayon wax dripping from it but we didn’t have any grey feathers. I think the audience should know that the man’s wings are made of wax and feathers and as he gets closer to the sun, his wings melt and he falls into the ocean. I like to think the myth can be interpreted as forbidden love. The sun is the light of his life and he risks his life to be with it. What I love about this piece is that the sun is so bright compared to all the darkness surrounding Icarus. I think if I could redo it, i’d do something to make the sun brighter.
