Heey! 😊
My name is Renata Alves, but you can call me Rê, if you want to. :D
I’m 20 years old, I’m studying Letras - Inglês at UFSM, and I’m taking an Técnico em Cuidados de Idosos course at Politécnico, UFSM. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed because I’m taking two courses at the same time, but I wanted to take advantage of remote classes to do. My family supports me in everything I do, they are my base.
Some informations about me: my favorite color is blue, my sign is scorpio, my football team is Grêmio 💙; and my favorite TV series is The 100.
I intend to study gastronomy as soon as I finish this course, ‘cause during quarantine I discovered that my real passion is cooking. 🍔
At the beginning of this semester, I had low to medium level of English, with several difficulties to understand classes or class materials. However, as the classes went by, with the proposed activities and the gamification strategy, I adapted and developed my English learning better.
I expected to expand my digital knowledge in this discipline and to be more connected with technologies that can help me to develop my digital literacy skills better than with social media. This way, I managed to acquire a lot of information about these tools, I didn’t fail to take a good look at Instagram before doing the activities, though. Hahahaha 😂
At the end of this semester, I’m much more digitally fluent, and I also got to know a lot of apps and diferent ways to bring technology to educacional and personal environments. Moreover, I’m very happy that my English skills are more developed. I believe that a large part of this comes from the motivation that the professor gave us to read texts, present activities and to Interact using the English language. Thank you, professor ❤️
In this discipline, the text I most enjoyed Reading was “Defining Digital Literacy” by David Buckingham, because he organizes the thoughts of many authors to explain the multiple literacies. In addition, a quote that I found interesting, and that fits the general use of technologies, was Umberto Eco’s: “If you want to use television to teach somebody, you must first teach them how to use television” (ECO, 1979). This sentence fits our objective with this discipline, which is to know the technologies and how to teach students how use them correctly, so that their use can become effective within the educational enviroment.
This period, all the subjects I've taken were remote. At the first time, I didn’t like it all, I found it stressful and tiring. But, over time, I got used to it and adapted myself to this model, despite preferring face-to-face modality. The interactions with most colleagues were definitely affected by this. Only contact we had was through formation of groups to work togheter or when it was very necessary for someone to ask something in the Whatsapp group. With the professor, my interaction was moderate, as I Always tried to answer questions, clear up dounts and to help when necessary.
These online classes helped me to analyze and learn how technologies can be used to effectively bring learning to students. I discovered numerous apps that can be very well used in the educacional environment, making classes more attractive for students living in the digital age. However, I was also able to notice how the lack of knowledge of these tools and the unpreparedness to use them can make teaching tiring and uninteresting (as occured at the beginning of the pandemic).
Thus, the activity that I most enjoyed doing during the semester was the analysis of apps, ‘cause I was guined to know and explore to know and explore tools that I didn’t even know existed, and that are very useful for personal and educational use. There wasn’t any activity I didn’t like, I found all of them interesting and importante doing.
I felt welcomed by the professor in the discipline, very accesible to ask questions and very clear in the activities. I confess that I was a little afraid of this discipline itself, at first, but throughout the classes and with the professor’s didatics, this fear was lost.
A suggestion for the fluency professor to use in classes is to use more games to introdue the teaching of digital literacy, because due to the increasing importance of this field nowadays, and it can be an interesting way to approach subjects of greater difficulty of understanding.
I give myself an 8, because althought I have excelled in the aspects of developing english language and had a lot of knowledge about new technologies, I could have dedicated myself more to reading the texts and participating in classes.
