Hey guys!! My name is Bianca, I’m 19 years old and I’m a student on the second semester of the Letras-Inglês course at UFSM.
I’ve been in love with writing since I was a kid exploring the wonderful world of fairy tales, but I only decided to take it seriously in 2019, when I started writing a fictional novel. And, in 2020, during the pandemic, I found out that I also enjoy writing short stories for children (and sometimes even trying to illustrate them kk). I’m a fan of music, animals, reading fantasy novels (I think my favorite thing to do when I want to relax is getting out of this world and going to another, so I really adore reading fiction), watching series, singing and I’ve recently become an eyebrows designer and micropigmentation artist.
It’s not news to anyone that it has been some time since we last had a normal, interactive, out-of-the-screens life. I wish we could’ve had the chance to meet each other in person, because I’m really looking forward to get to know all of you.
That’s why this opportunity we’re having to write about ourselves and our experience makes me feel so glad… I’m genuinely anxious to read what you have to say!
My Final Challenge
I chose this course firstly because I like English teaching, but also because I know it could help me improve my writing skills and increase my knowledge in an enormous variety of ways. However, I didn’t expect it to be so complete. I mean, I don’t believe this subject is available in every course’s curricular grade, but sincerely… it should. Since, from my point of view, it helps us expand our minds, enter a new technological realm full of possibilities and solutions and actually change the manner we’re used to see things; as limited.
I have kind of a problem-solver personality (I enjoy fixing things), and this subject has given me some skills that I didn’t even think I needed to improve this characteristic of mine. It helped me see things from a different perspective: learning (online or not) can be pleasantly fun, teaching can be unpredictable and entertaining, digital literacy revolves around being technologically independent and the use of technology is full of wonders to be discovered just like the world of fairy tales.
Gavin Dudeney, Nicky Hockly and Mark Pegrum ponder on their book about the importance of digital literacy, over how we need to prepare the next generation for a future where we don’t know what new jobs will exist or what social and political problems will emerge. It’s already proven that the digital revolution is transforming the world in an unreversible way. So is the fact that some professions will disappear with time.
For that it becomes urgent to be acquainted to the digital universe, to learn how to fit into it and to realize that there will always be something for us to study, for us to get closer to achieving our full potential. This subject was an important piece of this puzzle we’re slowly, strenuously, trying to complete: our careers, our lives.
I feel like this second semester, differently from the previous one, has asked way more of me and I couldn’t keep up with it the way I wished to. But I know a part of this feeling is due to this abnormal routine of isolation we’re sadly stuck to.
Now, to summarize, digital literacy is the future. And I can say with certainty that what I’ve learned this semester is going to follow me through a huge range of situations in my life. I’m glad it will. Even knowing I could have had a better performance and contributed more to it.
My grade, well… like I said, I could have done better, contributed and participated more. There were other students fully committed to giving their best and participating effectively. I know I don’t deserve to have the same grade as they do. But I think I understood well the purpose of the subject and I’ve also completed all the tasks that were asked, so… I guess something close to a 9 would be a good average for me.
It’s great to have been a part of this!! Let the next semester come and receive only the best we have to offer!!
One of my attempts to illustrate something 😊
