Sample C&C paragraph on PSO Transcript:
The text is kept coherent through clear and logical formatting. The heading "ABOUT THE ROLE" (L1) indicates the expected topics for readers with the use of subheadings "WORKING WITH VICTORIA POLICE" (L2) and "LIFE AS A PSO" (L33) separating the required values and daily duties, aiding readers to locate and distinguish the specific requirements of both the organisation as well as jobs the position entails. The piece is also ordered logically, following a chronological order, outlining the application prerequisites, (L4-14) process (L20-32), training for the role (L34-36) and then the role itself (L38-58), aiding readers to understand the temporal order of the role and envisage a future with the organisation. The piece is also kept coherent through regular cohesive ties, specifically the use of conjunctions. In lines 23 "and" is used to link the applicant's life "on duty" to their personal life "off duty", in order to emphasise the reach of their expected qualities and conditions around being drug and alcohol-free. A similar tie is made in line 20 to tie the "application process" to the "period of employment", again informing prospective applicants of the demanding expectations of working with the organisation. Further cohesive ties are made throughout the piece with the use of the second-person pronoun "You" (L) as a deictic reference to the reader, linking the expectations of applicants to them personally. Similarly, an adverbial phrase is used on line 44 ("Throughout your shift") to connect the ensuing duties such as "engage with the community" (45) and "proactively patrol the train platform" (47) to the abstract concept of a "shift", further clarifying the activities they would be expected to complete.
Sample F&S paragraph on Citizenship Transcript:
Cosgrove manages the topic of the address through deliberate use of non-fluency features, specifically pauses. On line 50 he uses an extended pause (...) to divert into the specific note of Lewis Kang's interest in playing with kangaroos and offers a personal comment in an effort to increase rapport with the immediate audience. Similarly, he uses a discourse particle "The point is that" (L54) to again switch topics from his comments on Lewis back to his discussion of qualities new Australians bring the community, resuming his more formal address and welcome. Cosgrove also uses formulaic utterances to both open and close the discourse. In lines 1-3, Cosgrove use the formal geetings "Ladies and Gentlemen. Good morning, Welcome" to begin the discourse and acknowledge his immediate audience and meeting their negative face needs in addressing them with titles, indicating his respect and regard. At the end of the discourse, Cosgrove similarly employs a formulaic closing "Welcome and congratulations'' to aid in shift the topic from their admirable qualities to expressing his best wishes for their future lives and bring the discourse to an end.
