In Secondary ELA, we are committed to ensuring that English Language Learners (ELLs/ESL students) have full access to rigorous, grade-level curriculum while receiving the support they need to grow as readers, writers, speakers, and critical thinkers. Our approach is grounded in the belief that language development and academic learning go hand in hand. We prioritize instructional practices that build both linguistic proficiency and deep comprehension of complex texts.
Teachers intentionally scaffold instruction by modeling thinking processes, offering structured speaking and writing opportunities, and providing clear vocabulary and language supports. Tools such as sentence frames, visual aids, annotated texts, and guided note-taking help students access challenging content without lowering expectations. We also design formative assessments that allow multilingual learners to demonstrate understanding even while their English proficiency is still developing.
Collaboration between classroom teachers, ESL specialists, and support staff ensures that instruction is aligned to students’ language needs and proficiency levels. Together, we monitor progress, adjust strategies, and create inclusive learning environments where students’ cultural and linguistic identities are honored. Our goal is to empower students to fully participate in academic conversations, succeed in reading and writing tasks, and build the confidence needed to thrive in school and beyond.
