It is the responsibility of our student's families to see that the band program's policies are understood and followed. Each family IS responsible for the attendance of their student at all relevant band functions. Each family IS responsible to see that their student practices their instrument DAILY. The success of the program depends on everyone involved...as they say, "it takes a village."
When a "band question" arises, it is important that you get factual information before discussing it with others. We do more harm to our band family when we talk about things that contain one or more falsehoods or half-truths. If questions arise, here's a helpful way to navigate the situation:
Always consult the band website, band calendar, and the weekly newsletters first.
If the question is performance-related or deals with band program proper (academically, etc.), contact a director.
If the question is related to fundraising, Fair Share, volunteer issues, etc., contact the Booster President and/or executive board.
BAND FAMILY CHECK-LIST
Volunteer!
Show an interest in your student's music studies!
Help your student find a quiet and consistent place where they can practice without interruption.
Stay current on your Fair Share account and communicate.
Follow up with your student about their practice habits and the work required for their classes.
Consider implementing a reward system for daily practice.
Volunteer!
Remind and encourage your student to maintain the instrument care practices they were taught in middle school (it will save money in the long run!)
Take woodwind instruments to the shop once or twice a year for maintenance and upkeep (it will save money in the long run!)
Ask brass players how recently they have given their instruments a bath; ask often (it will save money in the long run!)
Single- and double-reed students should keep AT LEAST three good reeds in their cases in constant rotation.
Be extra careful with school-owned instruments. Repair costs are high and negligence or deliberate recklessness will result in repair fees charged to the student/family using the instrument.
Communicate!
Volunteer!
Make faithful attendance at all relevant band performances and events a family priority (concerts, games, competitions, parent meetings, etc.)
Make sure your student is COMMUNICATING WITH YOU regarding their participation.
Encourage your student to use a print or digital calendar/planner for band, school, and any other activities.
Drop off your student EARLY to allow them adequate time to prepare for rehearsal or other events.
Pick your student up from rehearsals or other events in a timely manner.
DO NOT DROP OFF OR PICK UP BEHIND THE SCHOOL. The small faculty lot is not suited for traffic and our school administration have asked to eliminate parent traffic for safety concerns. Students know to meet you in the front lots. Please do not park along curbs or in right-of-way areas while waiting for your student.
All absences, late arrivals, and early departures need to be communicated and approved ahead of time!
Volunteer!
Keep your student healthy and hydrated (water is crucial for marching band!)
