What's on the other side? Who dares find out... In this blog I'll demonstrate how I created this mesmerizing portal material and the thought process that went into creating it. Let's step right in! (No pun intended.)
Ok, I may or may not have been playing Hogwarts Legacy the past few days and wanted to do something "magical" for this portal. I also wanted to lean into the blues and purples for a color palette, inspired by the game as well.
As for the overall shape/silhouette of the portal, I went with SKYRIM as reference to give the traditional look and feel of "stepping into a brand new world."

I researched a few ways to get movement on the material but more importantly how to make it interesting by watching a video from a channel called Geodraws on Youtube (link cited below). He showed how to setup multiple layers and ways to vary their indivdual speeds. I knew I had to use this technique because it looked so cool.
For some reason I couldn't get purple directly from the material instance editor (parameter), so I opted to try and create my own. I started out by adding red and blue, and a combined them using a LERP node with a gradient to evenly distribute. I thought the color was too dark initially, so I tested out a few of the default Photoshop-like filters and chose the Lighten node as a final.
Here is what everything should look like put together.
The creation of the portal material was actually really fun. I enjoyed testing "movement" in a material and again, never really thought possible. It's like bringing 3D art to life without the need to animate! Whoop whoop!
