Handling Disagreements
Handling Disagreements
We as people all have different thoughts and opinions and may encounter some disagreements when it comes to planning out new events and how certain things should go during an event. The members within our leadership program handle disagreements by simply talking it out. While this may seem slight, talking about situations to settle them is actually very significant because we believe words can help a lot. While planning events like spirit weeks many of us have had disagreements and will come up with a compromise. While compromising can be difficult, it is possible. For example, when trying to determine a name for spirit week one of us came up with a certain name that many of us liked, however someone else came up with another really good name, and that’s when our advisors came in to mediate. They don’t exactly get the final say, however they do put their opinions in and their opinions often affect the decisions of others and we do another vote. The final vote we do usually settles our disagreements with a majority vote. Talking things out not only helps to settle disagreements but it also helps to keep the peace and avoid as much conflict as possible. Another thing we do within our leadership program is have bonding events specifically for the members and staff within our program. For example all ASB students have recently had a mini seminar with Keith Hawkins. The seminar consisted of us indirectly discussing the problems between different friend groups in ASB and during this discussion of problems, Keith Hawkins gave us some words of advice. For example he explained to us, that everyone is different and not everyone will get along, however when you get into the real work world, you’ll be able to handle it because you’ll have the necessary “tools” to understand. He also said that though it may be difficult for us right now because we are still developing our own opinions, we can try by apologizing to anyone in ASB who we’ve done wrong by, whether it was speaking bad upon them or committing an immoral action towards them that was direct or indirect.
