August 21, 2020 Update

This is what I know today

Thanks for hanging in there with us. I don't think I need to repeat what you all know: we are doing all we can, the best we can, when we can.

I have very much appreciated all your emails and communications sending support for our teachers and staff as we navigate all this.

This update is being provided for everyone, but I have attempted to clearly mark information that is for, all students, VLA or Face to Face situations. If you are VLA there is an important notice about computer and book pick up next week. Please make sure you hit that point.

ALL STUDENTS

The Junior High Staff has worked diligently to readjust schedules so that Virtual Learning Students are mostly concentrated in a few class periods. To this end, you will most likely see some changes to the class periods when your students have class. We have not moved teaching teams.

Social distancing of 3 feet has been maintained in all face to face classes.

ALL STUDENTS

The Bell Schedule is still being processed. We are working through the times between periods to make sure students are not crossing paths with other teams. Masks and social distancing is going to make our return to school work; to this end, we need a little more time tweaking the times.

I know for sure that 1* begins at 7:30am and students will be dismissed from 6* at 2:15pm. I will have the bell schedule ready for you to look at next week.

If you are a VLA family, this bell schedule indicates when each class is held. Google Meet links will be linked in Google Classrooms for each class. Your student should receive an email in the coming weeks.

Upon arrival to the building for the first time, students will report directly to their first period class. If your student has 1* study hall, they go to the cafeteria where it will be important to find a seat to avoid coming within 3 feet of others.

ALL STUDENTS

We received great news Thursday: Medina County continues to be in the Orange Public Health Level. This means that we will move forward with our soft start on Monday, August 31st. This includes our VLA students. If you are a face to face or VLA student you will attend class according to the following schedule for the first week.

*NOTE this will ONLY change if Medina County is moved to red or purple next week.

AUGUST 31 and SEPTEMBER 1

Students with last names A - L will attend school. (VLA students report online)

SEPTEMBER 2 AND SEPTEMBER 3

Students with last names M - Z will attend school. (VLA students report online)

SEPTEMBER 4

No school for students

SEPTEMBER 8

All students report to school (VLA students report online)

ALL STUDENTS

To assist your student in meeting the teacher prior to Monday, August 31st or Wednesday September 2nd, the Junior High Staff have been busy filming welcome videos. These videos will be made available no later than next Friday.

We are working hard to get these videos out sooner. Given our small building and large number of VLA students, we aren't quite ready to open our doors. Teachers and staff are working hard to move desks and rooms for social distancing and assemble books and computers for pick up next week.

ALL STUDENTS

Attendance

If your student is going to be absent from class (even if your child is a VLA student), attendance must be recorded in the office. Parents need to notify the school by calling (330) 722-8257 (ext. 9200) by 8:45 a.m. on that day and provide an explanation for the absence. If the absence is due to an appointment during the start of the school day the student must present doctor's note from the appointment for documentation purposes. If a student must leave during the school day for a scheduled appointment, please present the notification from that appointment to the attendance office within twenty four hours or the next scheduled school day. If the school has not been notified by phone or personal contact by 8:45 am SchoolMessenger will call the parent. It is imperative that the school be provided with a phone number where a parent or guardian may be notified of the student’s absence. If the parent has not been contacted by phone, the student will need to bring a note from his/her parent(s) to the Attendance Office in order for the absence to be considered excused (if less than 10 days). This note needs to describe the nature of the absence and must be signed by a parent/guardian.

FACE TO FACE STUDENTS ONLY

Each morning, we are asking that before you send your child to school you monitor for illness symptoms. We are providing the Covid-19 symptoms checklist to your student on the first day of school, but you can also find the checklist here.

Given the nature of our current crisis, it is very important that you keep your child at home if he or she displays any sign of illness.

We have protocols in place outlined in the Buckeye Restart Plan for when a child gets sick or displays symptoms at school. We kindly ask that if you receive a call from the school and your child needs picked up, you do so within 30 minutes.

School staff are not permitted to diagnose your child, but our guidance from the Health Department is that if a child displays symptoms, they should be sent home.

FACE TO FACE STUDENTS ONLY

All students and staff will be expected to wear a mask upon entry and exit, in the hallway, offices and classrooms. When staff are able to ensure students can be more than 6 feet apart for less than 15 minutes, a mask break will be provided. Masks will be worn during study hall, but not during lunch. All teachers and staff have very conscientiously planned for how to do this safely as often as possible.

FACE TO FACE STUDENTS ONLY

We will be serving a hot lunch at school. We encourage you to use the PayForIt service to keep lunch money in your student's account. Click here to access the service.

Please note our microwaves have been removed from the cafeteria. Students who pack their lunch will not have access to microwaves.

FACE TO FACE STUDENTS ONLY

If you are dropping your student off at school, the doors open at 7:15. Please use this map for guidance for entering and exiting the lot in the morning. Pick up will begin at 2:15: please park your car and students will be released.

VLA STUDENTS ONLY

Device and Book Pick Up

Device/Material Pick up for VLA (Virtual Learning Academy) students is on the following days at all buildings. Please select the best day/time that works for you. The pick up of materials will run the same as the Spring. Enter from Wolf Road, pull up to the front of JH, stay in your vehicle, we will come to you, ask for your name and hand you your child’s supplies.

Wednesday, August 26th 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Thursday, August 27th 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Friday, August 28th 7:00 AM - 2:00 PM

**If our county were to turn RED on Thursday, August 27th, then device/supply pick up would be on Friday, August 28th from 7:00 AM-7:00 PM.

VLA STUDENTS ONLY

Study Hall

Each student is scheduled into a study hall. The purpose of the VLA study hall is to provide students time within the day to address any asynchronous work. Academics will be delivered during their regularly scheduled time of day and students will continue to be prepared for the next days class via homework or study skills.

VLA STUDENTS ONLY

Asking Questions

As best we could, we put all VLA students into one class period. This will allow teachers to teach directly to all the VLA students. In some cases, we were not able to do that and your VLA student will be present on the Google Meet computer in a teacher's classroom while other students are present in person. Please remind your student to mute their microphone upon entry and use the chat feature to ask questions. Teachers will check on your students via the chat.

To get individualized help, your student should email the teacher for help and describe the specific need. Your student's study hall does correspond with teacher planning periods in most cases.

VLA STUDENTS ONLY

Teacher Recordings

Recording of classes in which students are participants gets into a few privacy issues. At this point, attendance in all VLA classes is mandatory just like it is for face to face students. We are not currently requiring teachers to record lesson delivery. If your student is struggling, please have your student reach out to the teacher via email. Teachers will follow up with their students.

If your student is absent, don't forget to call the office and have your student email teachers to ask for makeup work.
