Students complete a range of assessments throughout the academic year across all subject areas.
Assessments are an important part of the learning process and help students, teachers, and parents understand how learning is progressing over time. They allow teachers to identify strengths, provide support where needed, and ensure students are developing the knowledge and skills required within each subject area.
Assessments also help students reflect on their own learning, recognise areas of success, and understand what their next steps are in order to continue improving. For parents, assessments provide a clearer picture of how their child is progressing academically and where further support or challenge may be beneficial.
Assessment methods may include:
Classwork tasks
Quizzes and knowledge checks
Extended writing
Practical activities
Presentations
Projects
Homework tasks
End of Unit assessments
End of Year examinations
Some assessments will also continue to take place through normal in class pieces of work, similar to the approach students may already be familiar with from Junior Phase. This helps ensure a gradual and supportive transition into Middle Phase assessment routines, particularly for students joining us in Year 6.
As students move through Middle Phase, we gradually introduce more announced formal assessments. This forms an important part of the transition towards Higher Phase and helps students build confidence, organisation, revision skills, and familiarity with assessment routines in preparation for future IGCSE and A Level study.
At all times, we do not want students to feel worried or anxious about assessments. Instead, we encourage students to see assessments as opportunities to demonstrate their learning, celebrate progress, and identify next steps. Every assessment is a learning opportunity, not simply a final outcome.
Throughout Middle Phase, staff work closely with students to help them develop positive study habits, resilience, independence, and confidence within assessments, while ensuring students continue to feel supported throughout the process.
Teachers also provide regular feedback and guidance throughout the year to support student progress and confidence across all subject areas.
