Salma B.'s "What We Bring" Digital Exhibit

My goal as an artist is to exemplify beauty, especially within women of color. I use my photography to voice not only my own identity but also the voice of the underrepresented. My teachers at Brooklyn Friends have made me realize how important my identity and culture are and how they should be shown within the school Community. At first, this Creativity Activity Service Project was meant to be a photojournalism project, but after beginning the interviews, I started to reconsider some of the aspects of the project.

The main aspect is making sure to ask each subject about their experience at BFS; how they contribute to BFS whether it is socially or academically; and how being a woman of color has changed or affected that process. I wanted to be intentional about who is being represented in my CAS project and this is why I chose all women from each minority group, to emphasize my main objective. I want to show you that this is much more than just a photography project. It’s a showcase of women that you know within our community who will make a mark on our world after graduating from Brooklyn Friends School.
