Upgrade is the student academic 'up-skilling' service that is provided (free) at the University. The 'service' is accessible and knowledgeable in supporting your academic development. Upgrade will be available for you when you start the programme to help you with understanding your assessment brief, getting to grips with writing at level 7 and understanding feedback. You will of course have a lot of support for your Academic Assessor in the year. You can access the website now for many useful tips about how to study, reference, write and make that transition to being able to show you are critically analysing your new subject matter.
There will be a digital capability and academic integrity moodle site for students to work through.
The IT essentials page is useful.
There is a university IT training course for students which can be seen here.
Upgrade will be further developing their site to assist students in the transition to online learning.
The Open University offer a 6 hour course (two three hour sessions) to prepare you to be an online learner. Please do consider this in your preparation. See the link here
We have developed a quick user-guide to help you understand what is expected of you in the written reflections in your e-portfolio. It would be useful to practice these tips now.
It is useful to now consider how you will move away from the familiarity of a reflective module you used in previous study, and move to a different approach. Be prepared to move on in your reflective style of writing as we ask you do do this a little differently, and we will explore this ore in your induction week.
In your e-portfolio we ask you to conditioner the 'story of learning' rather than the 'story of what happened'; move away from the detail of the event to what you have 'distilled' and learnt from one small aspect of the interaction or scenario. Something to think about!
In the wider development of your academic writing skills (beyond academic reflective writing), you can start to work through this Study Skills Workbook before you start the programme. We will refer to this on the Welcome day in December and in Induction week.
This module is designed to cover the fundamentals of good academic practice, by taking you through things such as plagiarism, and using different sources of information for assignment writing. This module can be accessed as soon as you have your student number, something to undertake before or in the induction week.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
Define and describe academic integrity and its connection to your studies.
Identify and apply good academic practice in your research, reading and writing.
Recognise and resolve problems with plagiarism and other academic breaches within your own work.
This coming year we will do all that we can to ensure electronic versions of texts and articles are provided to you or are are available to you via online searching. We had moved toward online resources for many key texts before the pandemic, and we know this is very important in the current climate.
When you receive access to your Brookes login and set up your passwords you will be able to have access to our online search facility. However you will still be able to see and start to navigate the library pages - here is a link to begin to acquaint yourself.
You will be able to visit the library, but there will be some social distancing measures and cleaning procedures to adhere to. We will give you more informations you start your programme.
Do take time to explore the university website and student pages - https://www.brookes.ac.uk/students/
