ACTIVITY
EXPLANATION
Pomodoro method is a study/time management technique that uses 25 minutes of focused studying followed by 5 minute breaks. This method helps students (or anyone!) manage time, maintain focus, and enhance productivity.
WAYS TO PRACTICE/MODEL IN CLASS
Lecture/Instructional Segments
Break down longer lectures or instructional segments into shorter, focused intervals using the Pomodoro Method. Teach a concept or deliver a part of the lecture for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. Repeat this cycle throughout the class session. This modeling not only demonstrates the effectiveness of the technique but also helps students maintain focus during the instructional period.
Group Discussions
Divide the class into small groups and assign them a discussion topic or question related to the lesson. Set a timer for 25 minutes and instruct the groups to engage in a focused discussion during this time. When the timer goes off, have the groups take a 5-minute break to recharge.
In-Class Assignments/Practice Problems
Assign in-class assignments or exercises that require focused work. Set a timer for 25 minutes and have students work on the task individually. After the time is up, provide a 5-minute break for students to rest and recharge. This approach helps students experience the benefits of concentrated effort and helps them manage their time effectively during class.
Labs
If the class involves laboratory work or practical sessions, guide students in using the Pomodoro Method to improve their productivity and focus during these sessions. Set specific tasks or experiments to be completed within each 25-minute interval, followed by a 5-minute break for reflection or note-taking. This helps students manage their time effectively and maintain a high level of concentration during hands-on activities.
Writing Sessions
If the class involves writing assignments or essay work, guide students in using the Pomodoro Method to enhance their writing productivity. Instruct students to work on their writing for 25 minutes, followed by a 5-minute break. This structured approach can help students overcome writer's block, maintain focus, and improve their overall writing quality.
Project-Based Learning
Incorporate project-based learning activities into the curriculum and model the Pomodoro Method during project work sessions. Provide students with project tasks or milestones to accomplish within each 25-minute interval, followed by a 5-minute break for reflection and planning. This approach encourages students to work in focused bursts and manage their time effectively while collaborating on projects.
