In case you didn’t know… (inspired by This is just to say)
In case you didn’t know…
I found a blueberry pie that you were
Hiding in your sock drawer
I am so very sorry that I found it
But you can’t blame me
I can smell it from my room
Blueberry pie, and socks
Water
Water is
In so many
Different places
Even if you just
Look around
You will see
Water
Water
Water
You will see it in
The rain
The ocean
The lake
The stream
The river
The pond
Water is like a
Butterfly
Peacefully flying
Through the
pale blue sky
Water is
everywhere
And no matter what
Kind it is or
Where you live
You will always feel
Like you are
Swimming
In Paradise

Bird
Sitting on
A half broken branch,
A bluebird
Sings its
Beautiful song.
Like a classic tune
Being strung
From a
Guitar
At the
Opening night
Of a performance.
The bright blue
Of its coat
Shines
Brighter in the
Warm, yellow, light
More than
Ever before

Pictures
Snap, snap, click, snap, click
That’s the sound of a picture
That’s taken of you
Winter
White snow falling down
Running fast to get back home
Air as cold as ice
Butterflies
Resting on a branch
One by one each lifts its wings
And flies through the air
Beach
Crabs dig in the sand scratch scratch, scratch scratch
Sandy waves, crashing on my feet crash, crash
The orange and pink sky, melting down into the green, salty ocean drip drip drip
Never want to leave this warm, breezy paradise shhh shhh
Friendsgiving
Carefully
I write the names
Of the people who are
Coming on each
Little brown card
Telling them
Where to sit during the meal
1 card
2 cards
3 cards
When I’m finished
I have a total of 32 cards
Placing one card on
Each seat
I am hoping I will get
A seat next to
My friend
Harper
Once I am finished
I take a seat on our
Soft gray couch
And wait
5 minutes
10 minutes
15 minutes
It feels like
Hours
That I’ve spent
Sitting in a
Hot savannah
With only enough
Water to last me a
few days
Suddenly
I hear a
Ding dong
The doorbell rings
I think it is
In my mind
Ding dong
It rings again
And I snap
Out of my daydream
And I get up
Off the couch
and answer it
When I open the door
My friend Harper and her
Family are
Standing there all
Smile
Smile
Smiling
Because they are happy they
Get to
Be here with us
And on the outside
I feel so
Happy and excited
But on the inside
I feel the tiniest bit
Sad because
My heart knows that
They will not be here to stay forever
Only for this
Wonderful yet
So short day
But even though I
I am feeling this way
The happy and excited feeling
Takes over and I
Grin and say
“Welcome to our friendsgiving!”

List Poem
My Backpack (Or what it use to be)
● 3 pencil stubs - 2 broken in half
● A pack of old gum that i never did eat
● A towel and a change of clothes - in case it’s sprinkler day
9 scraps of paper - with writing I can’t read
● A very old library book - that I guess Ii should return
● So if you want to come and see my backpack,
● The line starts back there
Lime (mine is cut in fourths)
Lime
Yellow, green, and sour,
The lime sits there,
Lonely,
And still.
It’s shape is like a piece of
Sliced watermelon.
With the peel,
Then the middle,
And then the core.
It’s smooth all around the
Outside,
With little
Holes in it,
Stopping in the middle,
Not wanting to go down
Any farther.
And if you would look back to that
Pearl white napkin and
That beige, hard table,
Who would you find
But the little sour lime,
Still waiting,
Wondering,
About the real world.
Wishing
And hoping
That maybe one day,
He too
Would get to
See the place where anything
Is possible.

The Ocean
Life is peaceful when I go to the ocean
No one screams or cries
Life is peaceful when I go to the ocean
Some days I just want to fly
Fly over the salty, sea - green ocean
Because life is peaceful when I go to the ocean
Life is peaceful then
Innocent
From the perspective of a black child,
At least what I imagine it to be.
Chocolate
Brownies
Black.
That’s all they ever see
I’m getting on a bus
Now make room for me
I’m looking in a store
See a black guy
Getting grabbed by
A brand new cop
His first day on the job
The man did nothing wrong
And this has gone on too long
I wish -i could stand up I
And say our cops are corrupt
But i can’t because i know
That if i try and go
Say something to that cop
I might be the one that’s
stopped
detained
Or arrested
Even though
I’m
Innocent.
