Non-Chron Display

All Around the World with Year 4 EAL

Before Tet, we celebrated International Week here at BIS. As part of this, EAL students in Year 4 wrote non-chronological reports about their home countries. We focused on key features such as: Topic sentences and supporting sentences, the passive voice, statistics, technical vocabulary and formal language. Our students were excited and proud to write about their cultures, and even prouder to see it on display in the middle of school where other students can enjoy it. Please click into the document below to see your child's work.

Christmas Acrostic Poems

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas....

We're on the countdown to Christmas class parties, Christmas concerts and Christmas holidays. To get students in the festive mood, Year 4 have been looking at Christmas poetry. In EAL we have been focusing on rhythm and rhyme, and how words that look completely different when they are written down can still sound the same, and vice versa.

Click into this Wordwall game that contains part of the poem 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' by Dr Seuss. Drag and drop the correct rhyming words into the gap.

Remember to say the words out loud so you can hear how they sound.

Where's Wally expanded noun phrases.

Can you see the tall man with a blue suit and brown hair, in the water?

Once you have found him, play with a friend or family member and use expanded noun phrases to describe a character in the picture to them. Use the table above to help you with the order.

Expanded Noun Phrases

This week, Year 4 have been learning expanded noun phrases. These are words and phrases we build around a noun to add detail. We don't use them for every single noun as it sounds unnatural, but it's important to use them for our main nouns to help the reader or listener to  build a picture. Plus it adds lots of interest to our stories.

Writing expanded noun phrases- Halloween edition

Open a box on this Wordwall game and write an expanded noun phrase to describe the spooky character.

Magpie Words

There are so many interesting and powerful new words in this story. Review the magpie words we have learnt in class by clicking the link at the bottom of the picture for this fun game.

The Dragon Slayer

This half term, Year 4 are reading The Dragon Slayer. This is an exciting story about a fearless dragon slayer who has a change of heart after he sees the consequences of his actions.

Adverts and persuasive language

With enterprise week just around the corner, Year 4 have been looking at how we can use language to make our products sound amazing and make sure that everyone in BIS wants to come to our enterprise shop!

Look at the examples of a good and bad advert below. What makes the good one good? What language is used to make you want to buy it?

Use powerful adjectives and talk directly to the reader (YOU!)

Use rhetorical questions. These are questions that don't need an answer but make you think:

"Are you hungry yet?"

"Do you want to be the best?"

Use imperative verbs. These are 'bossy' verbs that tell the reader what to do!

"Buy it now!"

"Visit today!"

Design a great logo

This should be the picture that people immediately recognise as your company. Think of the Nike tick or the McDonalds golden 'M'

Make your own advert!

Choose a product from the pictures below (or choose your own.) Then spin the wheel and start to build your advert.
