EAL Parent Partnership Meeting - How To Help At Home
Thank you to the 50+ parents who attended our recent EAL parent workshop. It was wonderful to see such strong engagement from our families. For those who couldn’t join, the presentation slides are attached below. The session focused on simple yet powerful ways to support your child’s language learning journey at home—through regular reading routines, meaningful conversations, and fun weekend writing activities. These strategies work equally well in English or your home language. Remember: being multilingual is a superpower!
We would like to wish all students and families a happy and successful 2025! HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Welcome to the BIS Story Advent Calendar 2025 - you can hear a different story every day throughout December by clicking on the numbers.

EAL Parent Partnership Meeting: Supporting Language Development at Home
On Wednesday, we held our first EAL Parent Partnership Meeting of the year at the Junior Campus, with nearly 100 parents and carers from F1 to Year 6 attending. The session focused on understanding EAL at BIS Primary, building the home-school partnership, and sharing practical strategies to support language development at home.
Led by our EAL team, the presentation covered ways to nurture children’s language development in both English and the home language. We emphasised that bilingualism is a gift, highlighting the benefits of maintaining a strong home language alongside developing English. The event was further enriched by a warm welcome from our talented Young Interpreters.
Our partnership with parents is key to helping children succeed both academically and socially. Together, we create the best environment for their success.
If you were unable to attend or would like to review the presentation again, the slides are below:
Our Young Interprers, led by the EAL Team, welcome new starters on the orientation day in August.
The EAL Team believes in an inclusive, collaborative learning environment where every child, regardless of language background, can thrive academically and socially, supported by dedicated English as an Additional Language (EAL) Teachers and Teaching Assistants.
The Year 3 EAL students have written descriptive poems about animals, painting vivid pictures with their words. From graceful eagles to shy deer, they capture the essence of each creature simply and beautifully.
See their colourful desplay on the first floor next to the 4N classroom.
To write your own animal poem at home, follow these steps:
Choose Your Animal: Pick an animal you like.
Look Closely: Watch the animal carefully.
List Body Parts: Write down parts of the animal, like eyes, fur, tusks, or tail.
Describe Each Part: Write a sentence about each part, trying to use your best words.
Put It Together: Make each sentence a line in your poem.
Make It Fun: Use words that make your poem exciting or surprising. Why not try a simile?
Read It Aloud: See how it sounds when you read it.
Fix It Up: Change anything you don't like.
Present it Beautifully: Type it on your iPad or computer or use some colourful paper.
Show Others: Share your poem with friends or family.
Thank you to all parents and carers who joined our parent partnership meeting on Wednesday 27th March.
We were delighted to see so many of you there!
If you were not able to attend or if you would like to view the presentation again, you can see the video and slides below.
Our EAL Leaders at Primary and Secondary, John, Luke, and Rob, recently attended the ELLSA (English Language Learning Specialists in Asia) Conference 2024, hosted at the International School of Phnom Penh (ISPP). Themed 'Creating Conditions for Success', speakers provided valuable insights into the latest language learning practices, emphasising the importance of student voice, academic literacy development, and embracing home languages. Our session, "Empowering EAL Parents," received positive feedback for its practical tips and strategies.
We would like to wish all of our students and families a Happy Lunar New Year 2024. May the dragon bring you strength, health, and good luck for the year ahead!
How do you say 'Happy New Year' in your home language? How do you say 'dragon'?
For the EAL Team, celebrating the home languages and diverse cultures in our school community is so important. This week, we collaborated with MFL and Art to provide a host of enrichment activities for children across the Primary School in an experience called 'World of Fun' on the EY&I campus and World Room on the Junior Campus.
Why not try some of the international activities below to learn more about our world?
Welcome to the magical world of storytelling with our special BIS Primary Christmas Story Advent Calendar! Each day, our wonderful teaching staff will share a heartwarming video story, told with joy and warmth.
How does this benefit EAL (English as an Additional Language) learners?
Language Development: By listening to daily stories, children can expand their vocabulary, grasp sentence structures, and improve pronunciation.
Love for Stories: Nurture a lasting appreciation for stories, sparking imagination and creativity in every child.
Cultural Exposure: Explore the enchantment of Christmas traditions, promoting cultural understanding alongside language development.
You will also see a fun vocabulary game from Word Wall to build up your Christmas vocabulary and help understand the stories!
We were delighted to see so many parents join us for our first EAL coffee morning in a few years. The presentation was all about EAL and how it works here at the EY&I Campus. Parents also had the opportunity to chat with our EAL team following the presentation. If you were unable to attend, please take a look at the slides below. If you have any questions about EAL please contact your child's EAL teacher, who will be happy to help.
