Appendix U - Cleaning Electronic Devices

The TS&SS Department has provided Alcohol wipes for the purpose of cleaning shared technology. Do not throw out the canister as it can be refilled.

  • Mobile phones and other frequently touched electronics like photocopiers, laptops, tablets, remotes, keyboards, mice and walkie talkies should be cleaned and disinfected regularly by staff who operate them, and between users if the item is shared.

  • Whenever possible, electronics are not to be shared. For shared items that cannot be cleaned/disinfected between users, staff must perform hand hygiene before and after use and not touch their face, nose, mouth or eyes.

  • When cleaning devices please consider the following:

    • Use plastic covers or screen protectors to make cleaning and disinfection easier (i.e., remove and thoroughly clean/disinfect the case, dry fully, reinstall).

    • Turn off electronics and unplug all connections before cleaning (remove batteries when possible).

    • Check the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning and disinfecting requirements.

    • If no manufacturer guidance is available, use disinfectant wipes or product with at least 70% alcohol. Do not use other chemicals as these may damage electronic screens.

    • Remove visible soiling, grease, etc.

    • Do not spray cleaner onto devices or submerge devices in cleaners. Apply cleaner onto a cloth and wring out as needed to avoid excess moisture

    • For screens, use a soft cloth and do not press hard.

    • Do not clean inside any ports or openings.

    • Dry surfaces thoroughly to avoid pooling of liquids.
