Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school.
Over 8 million U.S. students miss nearly a month of school each year.
Poor attendance can influence whether children read proficiently by the end of third grade or be held back.
By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.
Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absence.
JSM Attendance Comparison:
2021 AUGUST: 90.85%
2022 AUGUST: 91.38%
Attendance Matters! Every Child, Everyday!
What is MAV MONEY?
Mav Money is the reward we give students when the SOAR at School. To meet the needs of all our students we have physical Mav money that is used in K-2 and Digital Mav Money through a program called PBIS Rewards. Students can then use the Mav Money to buy things from the classroom or grade level stores. In our Middle School grade levels students use them to qualify for our Reward Trips.
Our goal is to always have a 4:1 Ratio. Behavioral scientists have long studied the ideal praise-to-criticism ratio. For students, that ideal ratio is 4:1. In other words, for each bit of negative feedback, there should be a minimum of four positive comments to balance it out.

Kinder
Kindergarten is getting close to wrapping up our first science and social studies units! In science we learned about our 5 senses and in social studies we learned about how to be good citizens. Next up is seasons/weather and our community!
First Grade
Hello families!
First grade has started W.I.N. ( What I Need ) Time this month. This program and time is designed to support our readers exactly where their Reading level is at. They started strong and reinforcing the skills needed to become successful readers. It is very important to keep the momentum going at home by practicing their oral reading fluency, reading nonsense words and sight word recognition. Remember “Readers are Leaders”.
Second-grade
2nd grade, we are working hard on understanding how a character's point of view changes throughout a story. We are also practicing identifying elements of a story, which helps us retell major events. In phonics, we are focusing on vowel teams such as ee, oe, oa, and igh. It has been really fun reading stories with words that have our vowel teams, as we are now professionals at identifying them and the sounds they make! We are closer and closer to becoming fluent, expressive readers because of it! Lastly, we have been applying what we know about addition and subtraction and using different strategies that make sense to our brains to solve more complex problems. As we close out the end of the first Quarter of 2nd grade and move into the second, we are overwhelmingly grateful for YOU, our loving and involved families. Thank you for your steadfast support and kindness.
Third Grade
Things have been exciting over in third grade! We are wrapping up identifying our reading challenges and writing an informational essay. We will be moving on to reading and identifying parts of narrative text. In math, we will be wrapping up our area unit. We will be focusing on adding and subtracting while showing an understanding of place value. In social studies, we will be diving into Arizona’s history. We are looking forward to seeing you all at parent/teacher conferences!
Fourth Grade
4th grade has been busy exploring new coding applications such as zSpace. We are wrapping up our Animal Defense Mechanism Unit in ELA and our Math Unit on Fraction Operations!
Students have learned new fun Math games!
Fifth Grade
ELA-We have been busy learning about themes and comparing/contrasting character reactions. We have also been utilizing our white board's desks.
Math- We have wrapped up our lessons on Volume and have moved along into fractions.
Science & Social Studies- The Matter Mystery Project has been moving alone swiftyl! We are wrapping up this month writing scientific questions and hypothesis with independent and dependent variables.
Sixth Grade
Hello Families from your Sixth Grade
Math: We have been focusing on Area and Surface Area! Students were able to use these skills to design their very own tent before fall break! After fall break we will be dividing fractions! Please remind students fractions are their friends! They can always draw a diagram too!
ELA- Completing a creative writing activity at the top of the learnings stairs.
Seventh Grade
Proportional Relationships was the subject of a Math Project in which seventh grade used the “Golden Ratio” to determine which Celebrities they would choose for an advertising campaign for a new beauty product.
In ELA with Ms. Quillin, students have been working hard to finish their modernization of folktales with a final draft of a narrative. They have also begun to work on a compare and contrast essay. They will compare their narrative with the novel they have been reading so far this quarter, Summer of the Mariposas. Lastly, students will soon be creating a web page with our narrative and other folktales to present.
In Science with Ms. Adams, students have been working on the probability of inheritance with Punit squares, learning about what causes gene mutations, and reading and creating pedigrees. In Summit, they have made it to checkpoint three and have taken their second common formative assessment on mutations and adaptations. They enjoyed working in groups on fossil records while using a geological time scale. It has been a very busy month of learning!
In Mathematics, students have wrapped up unit one on rigid transformations and took their unit one assessment. Following their unit one assessment, they were able to engage in a problem-based learning project about rigid transformations that are used by tattoo artists, and also a portfolio project of their choice. They have begun to dive into unit two which covers dilations, similarity, and slope. We are so excited to continue the Geometry fun!
Students are working on their motor development skills such as running, skipping, jumping, and walking) in game-like activities.
In Art, we are finishing up our neurographic art. We will be learning about first perspective portraits. After the lesson, we will be able to draw a landscape using a vanishing point and also apply one of our previous lessons on 3-D shapes to the drawing. Attached is the neurographic art we just finished.
After School Art Club for 2nd-4th grade students who enjoy creating art and would like additional opportunities to participate in arts/crafts projects.
