Chances are you’ve seen a significant increase in the number of students who struggle with mental health over the past several years. According to JAMA Pediatrics, even before the pandemic, the rate of child and adolescent anxiety increased 27% between 2016 and 2019. By 2020, more than 5.6 million youths were diagnosed with anxiety. With symptoms such as trouble concentrating, an upset stomach, or sleeplessness, anxiety can be one of the most debilitating challenges students face in classrooms today.
We know anxiety is more than just “worries.” It can influence classroom performance just as much as any other learning disability. Kids who are worried and anxious aren’t doing it on purpose. The nervous system acts automatically, especially when it comes to worry (which often stems from fight-or-flight reflexes). That’s why phrases like “just relax” or “calm down” aren’t helpful. But with practice, kids can learn to slow down their anxious brains, and we can learn to help them.
Define, teach, and routinely acknowledge family expectations
Discuss how you want to live as a family and identify some “pillars” (important, building-block concepts) that represent what you value. Talk about what those pillars look and sound like in every-day routines. To help the family remember and be consistent, choose only 3-5 and create positive statements about them. Here are a few examples:
Speak in a respectful voice.
Be responsible for actions.
Be safe; keep hands, feet, and objects to self.
Identify a couple of “hot spots” to begin. Challenging behaviors often occur within routines. Perhaps mornings or mealtimes create hot spots for the family. After discussing 1-2 ways to be respectful, responsible, and safe in the morning, teach what each looks like. Have fun with it! Set up “expectation stations” for practicing the plan and assign each family member one pillar to teach to the rest.
Behaviors that get attention get repeated. Notice when a child does the right thing and say something about each success: “I noticed you stopped to pick up your shoes in the hallway. Thanks for putting them away and keeping the walkway safe for others.” The easiest way to change a behavior is to point out what a person does right!
Remember this catchy phrase, “5-and-1 gets it done” to ensure five positive interactions for each negative interaction. When the expected behavior becomes routine, the reinforcement can fade away.
November 28-December 10
will be our school districts Mid Year NWEA Benchmark Assessments.
Stay up to date on your child's academic progress by joining PARENT VUE
Please stop by the office to fill out the papers and have identification ready so the front office can make a copy so you can access ParentVue as parents or guardians.
When everything is finished, they will provide you with an access code.
Thank you
Kindergarten
The Kindergarten team wants to send another big thank you to all our amazing parents who took the time to attend conferences! We so enjoyed getting to share how your child is doing at school. For this next quarter remember to be practicing those nonsense words and phoneme segmentation (saying all the sounds in words) as we prepare for their next round of benchmark testing in December! We are growing readers and writers here in Kinder!!
First Grade
Hello Families!
Thank you so much for stopping by on parent-teacher conferences and chatting with us about how amazing your child is, we love sharing all the great things happening in our classes. Teamwork is essential for our student's success at school, without your support we couldn’t do it.
Time has gone by quickly and just like that our first graders survived their first quarter amazingly, yay! We are very proud of them and how hard they are working to meet their goals. Now we just need to continue to practice our Reading at home and keep working hard at school to continue seeing amazing results. We can do this, First Grade Rocks!
Second Grade
We are having so much fun in 2nd grade. We are beginning our Math unit on measurement and applying all that we already know to help us build new knowledge. In ELA, we are always focusing on becoming more fluent readers. This week, we are practicing how to compare and contrast 2 different versions of the same story using a Venn Diagram. Our 2nd grade team LOVED meeting with our amazingly supportive, kind, involved families at conferences a couple weeks ago. We are loving the learning we are doing and growth we are seeing and can’t wait to witness all of the continued success we know we’re going to have as a 2nd grade group.
Third Grade
Thank you all for a successful parent/teacher conferences! Please remember to reach out to your child's teacher as the school year continues with any questions, or concerns. In ELA, this November we are focusing on nonfiction text and referring explicitly to the text to ask and answer questions. In math, we will be using place value to subtract with regrouping up to three-digit numbers. In addition to rounding to the nearest tens and hundreds place.
Thank you for all of your continued support!
Fourth Grade
4th grade has been working hard on many things! We have started our new ELA unit on the American Revolution, comparing decimals in Math, and learning all about the Earth’s Systems for our Quarter 2 Science unit. One of our most recent projects was comparing the layers of the Earth to the layers of a hard-boiled egg. Many exciting projects to come!
5th grade
ELA - learning about text structure! We sometimes utilize game platforms to review our standards.
Math - Our 5th grades did a great job with striving to succeed on their interim test, Miss Jackson is proud of our students! Now they will work On UNIT 3, Part 2: learning how to divide fractions.
Science - In Science, our Matter Project has officially wrapped up! Starting Next Week we take a deep into our Planetary Sciences, learning about the Earth, Sun, and Moon's relationship to one another!
Social Studies - continue to learn more about our Founding Fathers and documents, understanding the history of the constitution.
Sixth Grade
Math
Our Tent projects from October turned out amazing!
This month we will be continuing our journey with dividing fractions! Conceptually this can be difficult for students so be sure to check out Ms. Fitz's class page on the 6th Grade Website for extra resources to support your student. And a huge thank you for coming out for parent-teacher conferences, we appreciate you all!
ELA -
6th grade has started their next book for the quarter
Seventh Grade
Seventh grade is working on the American Revolution and the Declaration of Independence over the next few weeks. Here the students are writing a "Break-up" letter to King George III of Great Britain.
In ELA, we are starting the new quarter with The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan. This informational text will let eighth-graders explore expository text while learning about the foods they eat. We should finish the sections of the book by the end of the month, and we will study some multimedia sources with videos. Students will learn about paragraph structures, inference, and how to determine bias from a resource or author.
In science, students participated in a paper insect simulation before fall break to model natural selection. We finished all the checkpoints in our summit project: Adapt or Die? and began the research for our class Think Tank Discussion which will take place on Friday, October 28th during science class. We are beginning our 2nd unit on November 11th after we wrap up our final projects over the next couple of weeks!
In mathematics, students wrapped up unit 2 on dilations and similarity and took their unit 2 assessment. We have begun unit 3 on linear relationships. Students will be learning about proportional and nonproportional relationships, equations of a line, calculating slope, and solving linear equations.
Also, many of our 8th graders were able to go on our PBIS rewards trip to Peter Piper on October 7th. We look forward to our next trip in December for Quarter 2!
Physical Education- We are working on locomotor skills in game-like situations, and students have been doing well.
Girl's Soccer & Boy's Basketball
Please be advised that if students want to support our School they need to be accompanied by an adult.
