The Internet can be a wonderful place to learn, shop, play games, and talk to your friends. Unfortunately, there are also predators, identity thieves, and others online who may try to harm you. In order to be safe online, it's important for you and your kids to be aware of the dangers.
Many kids are confident that they know how to be safe online. However, there are a few reasons kids are often more at risk. They may not always think about the consequences of their actions, which can cause them to share too much information about themselves. Kids also are sometimes specifically targeted by cyberbullies or predators.
If you're a parent or guardian, you can help to keep your kids safe by talking to them about their Internet use, teaching them about online dangers, and learning everything you can about the Internet so you can make informed decisions.

Kindergarten
Kindergarten has started our plant unit in Science and we are conducting an experiment to determine which conditions are best for plant growth! Radish seeds were planted in a variety of ‘soils’ some are given no water and some are given no sun!
The kids are having so much fun with it and have their scientist's hats on daily ready to observe our plants and make predictions about which seeds are going to sprout first!
Soon we will be starting our animals unit in conjunction with our field trip to Odysea Aquarium.
We are still working hard on our phoneme segmentation, nonsense word fluency, and sight word recognition in reading. We are wrapping up our decomposing and composing numbers unit in math and are learning about maps in social studies!
We can’t wait to share all the growth and progress that has been made over the past quarter during parent-teacher conferences, see you then!
First Grade
First Graders are 100 days smarter!
Yes, we made it, they have learned a lot in the past 100 days and we are still going strong. This month was short and quick but filled with lots of learning and fun.
We continue to focus on our reading fluency and reading comprehension. This month we will be focusing on real-world connections during our guided reading lessons. Here is our first example, Drones Passage. The kids were so excited to see in action what they had been reading during the whole week. It’s was lots of fun!
Stay tune, more fun to come!
Second-grade
Hi there! Here's what we've been up to in 2nd grade.
We are wrapping up our Reading module and Science topic of "Weather". The kids have been working so hard to write reports on a specific type of extreme weather of their choice and are so excited to show their classmates the dioramas they made at home to go with their reports. We are moving on to learning about Biographies and Informational Texts in Reading and continuing to master writing and understanding Numbers 1-1,000 in Math by using what we know about Place Value.
We are looking forward to Parent Teacher Conferences and can't wait to brag about your child! Thank you for your steadfast support, always. We appreciate you!
Third Grade
In the month of February, we will be focusing on writing an opinion piece using evidence to support our opinion. We will be writing a book review on Peter Pan. In math, we are working with fractions. We will learn how to identify fractions on a number line, identify equivalent fractions, and compare fractions. In science, we are learning about how sound travels. While, in social studies, we are learning how to use and read a map.
We will also be preparing our 3rd graders to take the state testing by reviewing testing-taking strategies.
Fourth Grade
4th Grade is busy implementing new coding techniques, such as Lego Kits and 3D printing! We are beginning our 6th Math unit and working toward creating public service announcements that can make global impacts in ELA. Our Science unit on Energy has us intrigued. Our current science project is all about collisions and the influence of stored kinetic and potential energy!
Fifth grade is continuing to prepare for AASA!
Mrs. Black has been completing activities with the students on the central/main ideas. Ms. Jackson has been working on ordering decimals. Miss Farkash and her students just finished their lesson on the relationship between the Earth, Sun, and Moon!
We continue to push and prepare our students to be leaders! Looking forward to what the future months bring!
Sixth Grade
ELA - Students practiced building an argument by participating in a debate
Math - We are now moving into our unit to discuss Rational Numbers. This will be your student's introduction to negative numbers and also graphing in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane! Please be sure to check out the 6th Grade Website for additional resources to help support your student's learning!
Seventh Grade
Science fair top projects will be announced by Monday 2/6 after projects are submitted to our district science fair this Friday, 2/3. 7th grade just wrapped up their projects & we are continuing our learning in Unit 3: Abiotic Energy Flow. In this unit, students investigate different factors that play a role within our climate & Earth's various systems. At the end of quarter 3, our Mavericks will construct a self-sustaining ecosystem with 3 compartments which will demonstrate their understanding of energy flow. Empty water bottle donations are needed for that project! Send any empty, reusable, plastic bottles to school with your student to drop off to our project supply bin.
8th Grade
In 8th grade ELA, we are continuing our "Voices of the Holocaust" unit. Along with this, we have been comparing and contrasting poetry and other text structures. In the coming weeks, we will begin writing our literary analysis essays.
In science, we are wrapping up our science fair projects and our chemical reactions unit. In the coming weeks, we look forward to starting Unit 2.5 on light waves.
In mathematics, we are continuing to learn about functions, graphing functions, equations of functions, and linear models. We have also been working with Desmos to practice translating videos into graphs.
In coding, students have had so much fun creating their artificial intelligence scratch lens projects. They were able to display their filter for classmates to try out and receive peer feedback. In the coming weeks, we will be taking a break from artificial intelligence and working on lego robotics.
We have been doing some fun messy projects lately in art. In the older grades we have been making recycled paper, and marbled paper and now we are working on using tempera paint art called pointillism. We are in need of old magazines for collages coming up!
Boy's Soccer and Girl's Basketball

What is an Overall Proficiency Level of Proficient?
There are 4 AZELLA Overall Proficiency Levels (OPL):
Pre-Emergent/Emergent
Basic
Intermediate
Proficient
An EL student must achieve an Overall Proficiency Level (OPL) of Proficient on the AZELLA to be exited from EL program services. An OPL of Proficient is demonstrated by receiving the minimal scale score point for the Proficient level for Total Combined, Reading, and Writing. We refer to this as the three prongs. All 3 must be a proficiency level of proficient.
The Overall Proficiency Level and the Total Combined Score are not the same thing.
There is no raw score, or Scaled Score associated with the "Overall Proficiency Level."
The "Total Combined" is a Scaled Score with its own proficiency levels; this is not the Overall Proficiency Level. Rather, the Total Combined raw score is a weighted sum of Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking raw scores.
For Grades 1 through 12 (Stages II - V), the Reading, Writing, and Listening raw scores are weighted by two while the Speaking raw score is weighted by one.
For Kindergarten, it is simply a sum of Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking raw scores.
A raw score is a weighted sum of score points that a student earned on items across all domains (Total Combined Raw Score) or for a domain (Domain Raw Score). For each AZELLA administration, we derive score tables for Total Combined and Domains that converts from a raw score to a Scale Score which carries the same meaning across administrations. A cut score, which is on a scale score, is the lowest scale score point for a student to earn a Proficiency Level. For example, 2327 is the lowest scale score for a student at Kindergarten (Reassessment Test) to be Proficient on Total Combined. That is the cut score on Total Combined for Kindergarten.
Getting Ready for AZELLA Testing
The Arizona English Language Learner Assessment (AZELLA) is a standards-based assessment that meets both state and federal requirements to measure students' English language proficiency.
Please fill out a meal application if you haven't done so already.. even if you think they won't qualify. Some applications have expired as of 8/31/2022. Please bring negative balances of meal accounts to a positive as soon as you can.
