Confidence is vitally important to a child’s future happiness, health, and success. Confident children are better equipped to deal with peer pressure, responsibility, frustrations, challenges, and both positive and negative emotions.
And what is the KEY factor in developing a child’s confidence?
YOU! The child’s parents and teachers.
No pressure, right? Don’t worry - building a child’s confidence doesn’t have to be an intimidating or complicated task.
Here are some fast facts and tips to support this at home.

Welcome back JSM Kindergarteners and parents!
We hope you enjoyed your well deserved break. This quarter Kindergarten is working hard on our computer science skills and have begun implementing coding centers and new technology we haven’t worked with yet! The kids are doing a great job problem solving, finishing sequences, and writing their own code! We’ve got some future engineers on our hands. Ask them about what they’ve been learning!
First Grade
Happy New Year Families!
This month we want to share an amazing news regarding our first graders. We want to celebrate their enormous growth they all had on their Reading and Math Middle of the Year Assessment. Our first graders had the highest scores of the District, we are so proud of them and for that we have also you to thank. Parents without your support we couldn’t have done this, this is also your success.
Now we just have to keep working hard to keep them learning and growing. We are confident that with your support and their effort they will continue to grow. Make sure you celebrate them and keep encouraging them to Read Read Read!
Second-grade
Happy New Year, families! Our 2nd grade team of teachers were so eager to see our kids and kick off the new year with new goals and continued learning. In our first week back, we have spent quite a bit of time reviewing expectations and swapping stories from Winter Break. Aside from that, we began our Reading module on Weather, which focuses mostly on how text features help us understand what we are reading. We have also been busy reviewing our unpredictable vowel teams in Phonics and will be testing how much we have learned and grown in Phonics next week. We are merging the content we are learning in Reading and "double dipping" it with Science by researching all about different kinds of extreme weather. Lastly, we wrapped up our Math Unit on adding and subtracting on a number line and will go back to adding and subtracting within 1,000, using place value to help us! We are looking forward to the latter half of 2nd grade together and can't wait to watch all of the continued progress of our students unfold!
Third Grade
We cannot believe we are halfway through the school year! We are excited to start the new year with many more accomplishments in third grade! For the month of January, we will be reading Peter Pan with a focus on the point of view and comparing and contrasting. Students will then write a book review on the classic novel, Peter Pan. In math, we are wrapping up our division unit. Then, we will dive into fractions in unit 5.
All third graders need to have their multiplication facts memorized by the end of third grade. It is beneficial for students to practice their multiplication facts at home. Thank you for your continued support!
Fourth Grade
4th grade is beginning our ELA unit on Ratifying the 19th Amendment. We have started working on multiplicative comparison and measurement in Math. There are many exciting labs in science coming up related to our Energy unit! We are so excited to start 2023 off strong!
Sixth Grade
In math we are getting our introduction to Expressions & Equations. We are laying the foundation for basic algebra skills. Please be sure to check out my page on the 6th Grade website for resources to help support your student!
Seventh Grade
The 7th grade students are studying The Harlem Renaissance and identifying figurative language in different mediums. The students are working to create a curator statement for a Harlem Renaissance museum. Students will also write an argumentative essay focusing on a shared theme they identified about collaboration and community throughout the module
8th Grade
Happy New Year! We have begun our 3rd quarter and we are so excited for all of the new learning and adventures ahead. The counselors from Youngker High School will be coming to present to our 8th graders and will answer any questions that students may have about the world of high school. On January 24th, we will be taking a trip over to YHS to experience a day as a high school student. We will be taking a tour, attending an assembly, seeing what core and extracurricular classes are offered, and eating lunch! High School placement testing will be the first week of February.
In ELA, students have begun a new unit titled "Voices of the Holocaust". Students have begun reading the graphic novel "Maus" by Art Spiegelman while focusing on victims and upstanders.
In Science, Students have been working hard on their science fair projects. Along with this on-going assignment, students have been learning about Ionic and Covalent chemical bonds, and conservation of matter.
In Mathematics, students are wrapping up Unit 4 on systems of equations. They have done a fabulous job on their portfolio projects and we look forward to starting Unit 5 on Functions and Volume.
In the world of coding, students have been learning all about Artificial Intelligence. We have looked at AI in the robotics world, AI in the entertainment world, writing our own Ethical Algorithms, and AI in the social media world.
We are working on our cardiovascular endurance by running without stopping in game like activities. Goal for each grade level is to run, jog, or sprint in a certain amount of time without stopping.
Boy's Soccer and Girl's Basketball
Girls' basketball and boys' soccer tryouts end on Friday, January 13. Parents will receive an email informing them if their child has made the team. For those who make the teams, you will have a parent meeting in the gym on Thursday, January 19 at 5:15 pm. Our first game will be a home game against Inca on January 24.
Students will be released at 1:15 pm on Both days!
Please make sure to contact your child's teacher to set up Parent Teacher Conferences.
Thank you to everyone who came out to our Winter Concert K-4 and Band 5-8. It was a packed house filled with beautiful music, laughter and the holiday spirit!
