No matter what your personal feelings on high-stakes testing are, there is no escaping the reality that these assessments will be an important part of your child’s academic experience. And, everyone wants to see their student experience success in the classroom. So, what’s the best way to help your child prepare for high-stakes tests—and keep a healthy mindset while doing so? Here’s eight simple tips for parents to help your student perform his or her best on testing days.
1. Prioritize attendance and homework
Tests are ultimately intended to be a measure of how well students have learned the material being taught in class. With that in mind, what is the best (and most straightforward) piece of test-prep advice for caregivers is to do what you can to ensure that your child is fully engaged with his or her classwork throughout the year. Set aside dedicated homework time each night to make sure that your child is completing their assignments consistently throughout the year. It’s also a good idea to periodically reflect on your family routine, and make sure you and your student are keeping a schedule that gets them to class on time every day. If your student is absent for a day, or has to miss a class period, check in with them to make sure they can make up what they missed.
2. Communicate with teachers
Regular communication with your child’s instructor can help you gain insight into his or her progress. Make a point of meeting or talking with your child’s teacher on an ongoing basis to understand what your child is working on, what he or she will be tested on, and the areas that he or she is exceling and struggling in. Your child’s teacher is also a great resource for test-preparation practice or strategies you can use with your child at home. Plus, they can keep you up to date on group study sessions or other opportunities for additional review that your child may benefit from.
3. Talk to your child about test taking
The purpose and goals of testing are not always obvious, even to the students who take them. Especially with new test-takers, it’s easy to be intimidated by testing or simply not feel motivated to put forth a lot of effort. Have open, ongoing conversations with your child to explain the benefits of testing, focusing on how it helps them, their teacher, their school, and other educators understand their strengths and weaknesses and figure out the most effective ways to teach. You can also use this opportunity to ask your students how they feel about testing, and offer reassurance or perspective if they have any anxiety around exams.
4. Offer positive reinforcement
A little encouragement can go a long way in helping students walk into testing days feeling confident—which, in turn, can have a huge effect on their performance. Praise your child for the work that he or she does to prepare for testing, and share in his or her excitement when he or she has success with a new concept or skill. Similarly, when he or she is struggling with a topic, point out the progress that he or she has made and encourage him or her to continue working. Having already experienced success with the material that he or she will be tested on will help your child avoid test anxiety and perform to the best of his or her ability on testing day.
5. Support healthy habits
Sleep and nutrition can have a huge impact on your child’s ability to focus and retain information. One of the most helpful things that you can do as a parent is focus on supporting these basic needs. Well-rounded meals and a regular sleep schedule will help your child succeed in the classroom on a day-to-day basis. On testing days, it’s especially important to make sure that your child gets a good night’s sleep, starts the day with a filling breakfast, and goes to school with a water bottle to help stay hydrated.
6. Give your child a study space
A comfortable, dedicated space for homework and studying can work wonders for your child’s productivity. Make sure that your child’s space is quiet, well lit, and stocked with the right materials, like a writing surface, pens, pencils, highlighters, scratch paper, a calculator, and any other tools that he or she might need.
7. Keep testing in perspective
No single test is that important. Avoid putting too much emphasis on your child’s test scores—doing so can make your child feel pressure that will ultimately only affect his or her performance negatively. It’s also important to not be upset by a single test score. Low test scores can occur for any number of reasons; it may have just been an off day for your child.
8. Debrief after the test
After testing day has come and gone, talk with your child about his or her results and how he or she felt about the test. By discussing his or her answers, thought processes, and feelings, you can gain further insight into what he or she is struggling with and excelling at and then help him or her better prepare next time. Talking about testing can also help your child process the experience and overcome any anxiety that he or she might have had.

Kindergarten has been working hard on our sight word recognition! It is hard to believe they are almost at the halfway point to 100 sight words! They are doing a great job recognizing the sight words in text, using them in a sentence, and spelling them independently. With the school year wrapping up we are getting ready for our ABC Countdown, Ladybugs unit, and end of the year benchmark testing. As always, we are so grateful for all you are doing at home with them to support their learning, it does not go unnoticed!
1st grade
Believe it or not, it’s the Final Countdown! We made it to the end of the school year already. These kiddos have worked so hard and grown so much academically as well as emotionally and for that, we are all very proud. They have shown us so much this year and we have learned from them as well. Now we just have a final stretch before they get to show off everything that they have learned. Our End of Year Testing is coming up between the last week of April and the first week of May. Let’s keep working hard, we know that they will rock it!
2nd grade
Hi Maverick Families! Here's what we've been up to in 2nd grade. It's so crazy to think we only have a couple more months left together!
In Reading, we are entering our final Module all about different cultures. We are loving learning about different people around the world and sharing stories with one another about our own cultures and traditions.
We have quickly become masters at Phonics and can identify different sounds and the ways they are spelled when we hear or read words. It has been really wonderful to see our progress and how much more aware we are of the sounds we are hearing. We are becoming SUPER readers.
In Math, we have moved to our Unit on Shapes, Telling Time, and Money! Practice these things at home to help double up on the skills we are teaching here at JSM!
Lastly, we are SO eager to watch our caterpillars go through the metamorphosis process and become butterflies! Science has been jam-packed with observations, learning about each stage of the butterfly life cycle, and of course, preparing for our long-awaited field trip to Butterfly Wonderland later this month.
As always, we appreciate your involvement, care, and overall love you pour into your kids each day. They are our greatest joy!
3rd grade
Our third graders will be taking the state test for the first time this April. Please reassure your 3rd graders that they have been practicing and will do amazing! We are excited for our 3rd graders to show what they know. Once we are done testing, our third graders will be celebrating with a field day!
We will start a new module in our ELA that focuses on the importance of clean freshwater around the world. In Unit 1, students read the text One Well: The Story of Water on Earth to build background knowledge about freshwater around the world. In math, we will be spiral reviewing all the skills that we have learned to prepare for the math assessment.
4th-grade
4th grade is getting ready for our first big state AASA test on Tuesday! To help us relax during test prep season, we are focused on coding our LEGO projects. We will be wrapping up our ELA (Love that dog book) and Math (Measuring Angles) units in the first week of April. Then we will begin our new units; ELA (Writing Poetry) and Math (Properties of Two-Dimensional Shapes). Science has been exciting as we learn new characteristics of Waves!
5th grade
5th grade began state testing on Thursday, March 30th. Students have been preparing in all classes, and working hard on testing strategies to feel at ease during this first session!
Other than that, we have made posters for our 5th-grade friends at Jasinski to rock their test and have continued to practice our STEM skills!
6th grade
We are finishing up Unit Rates & Percentages! Next time you go out to eat, ask your student to help you calculate the tip :) We are gearing up for state testing! Students are working on creating a review crossword, game, or comic strip. Stay tuned for some of those finished projects!
7th grade
7th grade is ready to "Show What We Know" on the AASA. They have been preparing and working to demonstrate their skills in Writing, English/Language Arts, and Math. We are still accepting donations of clean healthy snacks for testing times. Remember to have your scholar get a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast before school. As always, thank you for everything that you do!
8th Grade
In math, students have wrapped up the end of Unit 7. They learned about applications of arithmetic with powers of 10 and how to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and estimate with scientific notation. We have now worked our way back to Unit 8 to complete the remaining lessons on Pythagorean theorem and irrational numbers.
In ELA, we will be starting a new novel, Farewell to Manzanar. It explores the life of a Japanese American family who lived in an internment camp after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. We will be reading, doing research, and making vocabulary booklets in relation to this novel.
In science, we are spending the next two weeks reviewing & gearing up for our AZSci state test. We are working through reviewing all 6-8th grade standards before we begin our last unit of the school year learning life science. Please send any cardboard tubes in for our next project!
