This calendar is meant to serve as a guide for Homeless Liaisons to help organize their yearly requirements. Use this as a starting point and be sure to adapt the recommendations to meet your district's specific needs.
Connect with all families that were identified last year and verify their eligibility for the upcoming school year. Ensure that you're asking about potential changes in residence, younger siblings in the home, and family needs.
Ensure all eligible children and youth are identified and afforded their rights.
Review your school's written procedure and board policy for any relevant updates that may be needed.

Send an email to all staff to ensure they're aware of the process for referring students who may be MKV eligible. Include the Basic Education Circular: Education for Homeless Youth.

Make your first ECYEH data site update. Be sure to enter all eligible children and youth.
Pull student records to cross-reference students with high absenteeism rates and those experiencing homelessness. Reach out to ensure those students are not facing barriers caused by homelessness.
Consider attending the Paving the Way to Educational Success Conference.

Consider community partnerships to provide MKV families in need with Thanksgiving meals and other resources.

Connect with unaccompanied youth seniors about the FAFSA application. Ensure they have their verification letter and understand how to apply as an independent student. See the unaccompanied youth section for more information.
Connect with unaccompanied youth before winter break to check in about their intended housing plan. Connect youth in need to shelters and other community resources.
Consider partnering with community agencies to provide holiday meals, gifts, and other resources for families in need.

Check in with all identified students and families as their residence may have changed over winter break. Ensure that transportation is updated accordingly.

Review your list of identified students for re-verification next year. Consider sending families notice of this upcoming re-verification.
Review your list of identified preschool-age siblings who will be entering kindergarten in the upcoming school year. Ensure that they are connected to their district of origin (if applicable) or district of residence for enrollment.
Review your list of other early childhood siblings who may need support enrolling in early childhood programs for the upcoming school year.
