We want our BCPS students to develop technical skills such as digital literacy so they are prepared for tech-driven careers. Basic technical skills such as navigating online platforms, understanding digital tools, and making data-informed decisions are critical.
However, we also want to ensure we are utilizing a blended, balanced approach in our work. Empathy and collaboration are soft skills that must be fostered so students can communicate effectively, resolve conflicts, and work well in diverse tech-rich environments. We want our students to ethically and responsibly interact in both digital and non-digital spaces as they actively contribute to their communities.
As a result, we’ve crafted a quick process to help you reflect on your instructional practices. Our goal is simple: enhance student outcomes and the student learning experience. Let’s get started!
Select a recent unit [or the next unit] and complete the chart below as you reflect on the following components. Please fill in the gray boxes as you work through this document.
As you plan your next lesson/unit, consider the following components. Place your answer in the gray shaded boxes on this document.
🎯Set Clear Objectives: Define the specific learning goals that justify device use, ensuring that technology serves educational purposes.
⚖️ Balance Digital and Non-Digital Activities: Incorporate hands-on, offline activities such as group projects, art, or collaborative learning to provide a break from screens.
⌚ Structure Device Time: Create a schedule that designates specific times for device use, ensuring that students engage in both digital and non-digital tasks.
👟 Encourage Active Learning: Focus on interactive teaching methods, such as discussions, debates, and collaborative projects that do not require devices.
⏳ Use Devices for Specific Tasks: Limit device usage to particular assignments or activities, emphasizing their role as tools rather than constant companions.
💻 Consider Creating Device-Free Zones: Designate areas or times where device use is prohibited, encouraging face-to-face interaction and engagement.
Thank you for reflecting on your practice. Reflection forces us to pause and examine our professional practices. Please share your completed document with Dr. Sherry Wiese.
For participating in this exercise you will receive 5 PD points on your transcript in Professional Learning.
