BCPS educators pivoted to meet the changing needs of our students within a blended learning environment. You have acquired new skills, worked with colleagues to share ideas, and never lost sight of the students we are striving to serve. We know that Canvas in particular has been a heavy lift and has caused a significant shift in our practice.
Our goal is to spotlight the work that has been occurring across our county. Many of us learn from viewing best practices in action, as we see what our colleagues have created. We learn from the tips and tricks that our peers have developed. We challenge you to showcase and share what you have been doing within Canvas to meet the needs of our BCPS students.

Create a 5-7 minute video detailing what you have done, and how you have done it, on any of the following:
What tips and tricks have you discovered as you navigate Canvas?
What organizational structure have you found most helpful for your students as you design units/modules?
How have you effectively integrated tools (such as Quizizz, EdPuzzle, Flipgrid, and others) within Canvas?
What ideas have been effective in promoting student participation and fostering student agency?
How have you used Canvas to support the non-academic needs of your students?
How have you been able to collaborate with colleagues within Canvas? (within a grade level/department or across grade levels/departments)
Please do not just show what you have created within your video, but also provide an explanation for how other teachers can create something similar. Share the steps you took when creating or when integrating tools. We are hoping the videos will not only serve as inspiration, but also as tutorials for others to reference as we all strive to gain more confidence with Canvas.
One of our cultural norms in Bedford County is “freely share best practices and resources with others.”
We want to encourage professional growth as we all take risks and explore new resources and ideas during the school closure.
In addition, if you create and share a video you will earn 10 recertification points.

We have compiled the submitted final tasks (chart) so you can peruse the units created by your peers to determine if there would be anything that you could use within your own practice.
As you recall our goal with the “Creating a Virtual Learning” module training was to ensure our BCPS staff had access to the information and tools needed to positively impact student achievement and student wellness. The module provided a baseline training so that all staff would be familiar with the academic expectations for the 2020-2021 school year.
Each teacher was required to submit a final task that adhered to the best practices communicated within the module. The directions provided for the final task also stated the following:
Your submitted unit plan will be included in a division-wide resource for all BCPS teachers to access and utilize, as we move toward a blended instructional approach.
Make sure all resources embedded within your unit plan are accessible to all BCPS employees. (adjust share settings)
If you submit your unit plan within the BCPS Commons, then it will automatically be shared with all BCPS staff.
We will post what is shared on this page and it will be included in the weekly Professional Learning updates so other educators can learn from your experiences.
All submissions should be sent to and/or shared with Sherry Wiese.
We look forward to learning with you and from you.
