The BCPS team of ITRTs has created a website with helpful resources and “how to” guides for Canvas. Please access this site for answers to your most popular questions. It will also be a helpful resource as you guide parents and students in gaining confidence with Canvas. Check back frequently as the site will continue to be updated.
Each building has an individual who is considered the “point person” for Canvas and has received additional training in order to support you as you navigate the capabilities of Canvas. Please make sure you access this resource for any individual questions you have.
Please be reminded that your web presence will be contained in Canvas.
Request an individual appointment with a BCPS team member by completing this FORM to pose a Canvas question or to troubleshoot!

Grade Passback has been enabled between PowerTeacher Pro and Canvas. There are some limitations to this. Grade Passback is a feature that lets a teacher sync their grades in Canvas back to PowerTeacher Pro, making grading an easier process. Attached here are the guides provided by Canvas regarding how to set up Grade Passback and how it works. Matt Uselton also put together a video showing the process.
Instructor Help: using PowerTeacher Pro in Canvas
PTP Part I – How do I import assignment groups from PowerSchool?
PTP Part II – How do I set up an assignment to be sent to PowerSchool?
PTP Part III – How do I sync grades to PowerTeacher Pro (PTP) in PowerSchool?
Video for BCPS showing these processes.
Some things to note:
If you have multiple sections under one course, the grades will pass back to the specific sections in PowerTeacher Pro, as long as the sections have SIS ID numbers.
Grade Sync will appear in the navigation of your course.
The connection process will need to happen in each course that will send grades back to PowerTeacher Pro.
When assignments or quizzes are built, you will need to select the box for syncing in order for it to be included in the grade passback.
There are some limitations to Grade Passback.
Grade Passback will only work for classes that are generated by PowerSchool and have an SIS ID.
A grade will not sync to PowerTeacher Pro if it was not completed by all students. This affects items using Mastery Path and items only assigned to individual students or sections.
Google Forms as quizzes will not communicate back to PowerTeacher Pro Gradebook unless the teacher puts the grade on the assignment or quiz in Canvas that the Form is attached to.
If you are using one of your PowerSchool courses for ease, it will only pass back grades to that course (i.e. All content is found in the Homeroom course, grades will only pass back to Homeroom).
Grade Passback is optional for all teachers. You are not required to use it at this time.
If you need assistance with moving your content to a PowerSchool generated course, contact Kathy Brisentine (kbrisentine@bedford.k12.va.us) or your Canvas contact in the building.
Grade Passback "How To" Video
Learn how to export canvas modules in order to view them offline. Either view the video or check out the directions below.
Have the Student go to Canvas Modules.
Choose "Export Course Content" at the top of the page.
Locate and open the zipped file under "Downloads" in the File App on the Chromebook.
Chromebooks automatically open zipped files in a read only format; continue below get a usable file other than this read only version.
Drag the read only folder up to "My Files."
Locate and open the file titled "Index."
This should open automatically within Chrome, giving the student a snapshot of all module content at the time of the download. As changes occur within their modules, they will need to download the content again.
