Part 4 consists of a series of five short monologues, each lasting about 30 seconds.
You will hear the recording twice.
The monologues are all on a related topic.
There are two parallel matching tasks relating to the monologues.
Each task consists of five questions and you have to select the correct option from a set of eight.
You have to choose the correct options to match with each monologue.
The tasks focus on two different aspects of the monologues (for example, identifying what happened to the speaker and understanding why the speaker chose a particular course of action).
You have to complete both tasks while you listen.
The answers in each monologue can be in any order, for example.
Action plan
Quickly read the instructions and options A–H. What is the link between the five recordings?
Study options A–H and underline the key words in each.
Before you listen, think of words or phrases that the speakers might use to talk about different aspects of the topic.
You can answer both tasks at the same time, or do one task in the 1st listening and the other on the 2nd listening.
The answers to the tasks may come at the beginning, middle or end of what each speaker says.
The speaker is unlikely to use exactly the same words as the options, so listen for paraphrases.
At the end of the test, carefully transfer your answers to the answer sheet.

TASK ONE
21 C 'Got talking to' suggests a ' chance encounter'.
22 G Although the speaker mentions that her father is an accountant, she goes on to make it clear that he advised her against taking up accountancy as a career.
23 D 'Master' is a synonym for' (male) teacher'.
24 B Her aunt is the relative who she says 'got me into' (= inspired her interest in) the career.
25 E 'That was it' means 'that was all that was necessary'.
TASK TWO
26 F 'Constantly having to train new helpers' is a paraphrase of 'rapid turnover of staff'.
27 D The speaker makes it clear that she was lucky to get her position given the number of applicants from this country and elsewhere.
28 C The speaker explains how he and his family eventually moved to a place nearer to the airport because of the pressures of commuting.
29 A The date of the show is the deadline, and what the speaker says about these makes it clear that it can be difficult to meet them.
30 H It is clearly not easy to have a straightforward working relationship with someone who is bad-tempered.
You will hear five short extracts in which different people are talking about taking a gap year – the time which some young people take off from their studies to gain other experience.
