This week in Year 5, we have continued to use The City of Ember as an exciting stimulus for learning, and this has led to some fantastic creativity across the curriculum.
In Reading, we discovered a shocking twist within the story - the mayor had been stealing from the storeroom! Pupils brought this moment to life through role-play, acting out what might happen when Lina and Doon reported the mayor to the guards. It was wonderful to see such thoughtful interpretations and confident performances.
In Writing, we built on this role-play activity by creating town announcements, informing the citizens of Ember about the mayor’s crimes. We also began drafting the opening of our own stories, imagining what might lie beyond the mysterious door leading out of Ember. The children produced some vivid setting descriptions, showing off their great imaginations.
In Art, we explored printing techniques using recycled materials as stamps, having been inspired by the citizens of Ember who reuse objects due to limited resources. This resulted in some fantastic abstract artwork that beautifully captured the darkness and scarcity of light within the city.
In Science, we stepped away from Ember for a hands-on lesson, where we learnt about the parts of a flower by dissecting lilies. This practical activity helped deepen our understanding of plant structure and function.
Well done for a super week of learning, Year 5!
