This week in Year 4, pupils have been exploring the use of electricity in two contrasting locations: Japan and rural Kenya. They used their map skills to locate both places, identifying the continents they are in and marking the equator. Building on this, the children applied their scientific understanding to consider where solar power would be most effective and explained their reasoning clearly.
As part of their innovation challenge, pupils developed ideas to provide electricity for an off-grid community, while also considering the need for access to clean water. We were incredibly impressed by their critical thinking skills and the mature way in which every child was able to apply their knowledge.
Towards the end of the week, we explored how innovation has changed our local area by comparing images of our campus before and after it was built. Pupils engaged in thoughtful discussions, asking questions such as: Do buildings work without electricity? Is building on land always a good thing? If we need these buildings, how can we be responsible? They made excellent links to renewable energy and sustainability, demonstrating a growing awareness of their role in shaping a more sustainable future.
