It has been an action-packed week of discovery and deep thinking in our classroom! In mathematics, we have been diving deep into algebra, specifically focusing on one and two-step equations. This unit has been a fantastic test of our problem-solving resilience. I have been so impressed to see the students taking risks and thinking reflectively as they navigate new challenges. We’ve been busy refining a range of strategies to master these concepts—from using visual diagrams to represent unknowns to utilizing trial and error and the power of inverse operations to double-check our solutions.
Our literacy work has taken a more atmospheric and emotional turn as we prepare for a major creative writing piece: a rewrite of the "Reaping" scene from The Hunger Games. The focus this week has been on "show, not tell". Instead of simply stating a character's emotion, the students are learning to build tension and reveal feelings through subtle actions, evocative speech, and sensory descriptions.
Finally, our inquiry sessions have transported us back in time as we begin exploring the Ancient Islamic Civilisation. We launched the unit with the big question: "Why do we learn about this period?" Many students were surprised to discover just how much of our modern world—including the numeral system we use every day—stems from the incredible inventions and scientific breakthroughs of this era.
