This week in Year 4, we have continued to explore our Central Idea: People and organisations work together to create systems that benefit society. Through our learning, the children have shown excellent curiosity, thoughtful discussion, and growing confidence in sharing their ideas.
In History, our inquiry focused on Anglo-Saxon justice systems and laws. The children investigated wergild, trial by ordeal, local courts, and King Alfred’s laws, carefully considering how each system worked. They explored the pros and cons of each justice system and debated which they believed was the fairest, justifying their opinions using historical evidence. They also reflected on which system they felt was the most unfair, showing strong critical thinking and empathy.
A highlight of the week was a year group role-play discussion, where the children considered the fate of a starving child in Anglo-Saxon times who had stolen bread to feed his family. This powerful scenario sparked thoughtful debate, with pupils taking on different viewpoints and working hard to present convincing arguments. It was wonderful to see how confidently they expressed their ideas and listened respectfully to others.
In Science, Year 4 began exploring sound, investigating how sound is made through vibrations and discussing how different people may interpret the same sounds in different ways. The children were highly engaged and asked some thoughtful questions as they began to build their scientific understanding.
In PE, pupils focused on developing their fitness and coordination, showing great effort and enthusiasm during lessons. Lullingstone class enjoyed a second excellent swimming session where all children continued to build confidence and skills in the water.
