This summer, the design development phase was completed when detailed architectural plans were submitted at the end of July. While not yet final, these drawings are far more detailed than those in schematic design and carry specifics about electrical, plumbing, HVAC systems, cabinetry, finishes, and more. The design and construction teams use the design development documents to perform a cost estimate for the project, ensuring the building is on budget. This allows the district and design team to understand whether adjustments need to be made to bring the project into budgetary compliance.
Once this estimate is complete, the team incorporates any changes and begins the final design phases, which involve creating highly detailed construction documentation for assembling the new high school.
Completed along with the design development documents was an “early site package.” This set of drawings outlines how the school site needs to be prepared for construction. With Towslee Elementary now demolished, the site work can begin. This site work includes installing utilities and earthwork that bring the building pad up to the proper elevation. Slated to start in early October, this will continue until the warmer spring weather when foundations can be poured.
Anticipating when the building is completed, TDA Project Manager Scott Alleman commented, "One of the spaces I am most looking forward to seeing is the new event entrance and auditorium."
The public-facing event entrance will be used to access the school competition gymnasium and performing arts center for community events.
"The gymnasium seats 2,000 people. We can fit the whole high school in there. The performing arts center will be state-of-the-art and seat 1,000 people. Both of these will be dynamic spaces, and the team has spent a lot of time thinking about how the community will be welcomed into the school here."
The new school is a compact, two-story building, in contrast to the existing single-story school, which is one-quarter of a mile long.
"I think the way we have laid these spaces out will greatly strengthen how the school district wants to educate their students. The existing building doesn't do that, so students and staff will be better off as a result."
The new school is scheduled to open in the fall of 2027.
Site improvements at Kidder Elementary School were completed over the summer and have been in use during the new school year. This site update included expanding the parking lot's capacity and reorganizing it so traffic associated with the elementary school was taken off surrounding city streets. Site updates to Applewood Elementary have begun, and the team estimates they will be completed this winter.
Additionally, architectural documents were completed for both the Board of Education building and the new Maintenance Facility. These were sent out for bids in late August, with the construction process to begin on schedule.
On October 17th, Brunswick is hosting a community meeting in the High School Media Center at 6:00 p.m. to update the community on the overall project. The meeting will include an animated walkthrough of the new school so everyone can see the new spaces firsthand. We look forward to seeing you there!
