February 2024 Update: Brunswick Construction Project

Progress continues on the Brunswick City Schools Construction Project. Significant milestones were met during the design process in January, with all aspects of the project moving forward.

Towslee and Willetts Demolition Progressing

The abatement and demolition process for Towslee and Willetts Schools is scheduled to begin in February. Before the demolition, all hazardous materials will be removed from the buildings during the abatement process to ensure the safety of the crews. Upon completion of building abatement, the deconstruction of each building will begin. Just as plans are made for constructing a school, plans must also be made to demolish it. This ensures that the process is done efficiently and safely. The  Towslee Elementary demolition will begin in May, with the Willets demolition following Towslee.  The demolition activities for both buildings are expected to take a total of three months. This will prepare the sites for future construction of the new high school (Towslee site), as well as the Maintenance Department and Board of Education buildings (Willetts site).

Site Improvements Enhance Safety and Efficiency at Kidder and Applewood

The City of Brunswick Planning Commission has reviewed and approved the drawings for site improvements at Kidder Elementary School and Applewood Elementary. These projects aim to prioritize increased parking capacity at each school, allow traffic to be contained on the school site, and provide a smoother traffic flow. Site construction for both schools is expected to begin this summer, with the Kidder elementary project finished for the upcoming school year, and the site improvements at Applewood will be completed later in the Fall of 2024.

Furniture Selection Underway

The design team is refining plans for the new Maintenance Department and Board of Education office. The Maintenance Department will continue to serve as the hub for all district service-related needs as BCSD maintains eight buildings and almost 230 acres of land. The new board office will have updated office layouts for administrative staff and a multi-functional space for board meetings. We are excited about these updates, which will enhance the efficiency and functionality of these vital spaces. These buildings will replace Willetts Middle School and offer upgraded facilities to ensure optimal maintenance of BCSD's vehicles and equipment.

High School Design Takes A Major Step Forward

A significant milestone was achieved on January 31st with the submission of the schematic design for the new high school. This initial document set outlines a tentative arrangement of space for the school's layout and serves as a foundation for preliminary cost estimates. Over the next month, rough construction estimates will be performed to ensure the project is on track from a timing and budgetary standpoint.

May 2024 Engagement:

A public meeting is planned for May 1, 2024 at 6:00 PM in the Student Center of Brunswick High School where the design and construction team will review progress and present the initial site plans for the new school and answer any questions,. Additionally, at this meeting, all community members will have the opportunity to provide their preferences for the exterior design of the new high school. While educators are consistently involved in the layout of the inside of the building, we seek your input on how the outside looks. Don’t miss the opportunity to weigh in!

Stay tuned for future updates, and feel free to reach out with any questions. Together, we are building a modern and functional educational environment for the future of all Brunswick City School students.
