After months of collaborative planning, the district revealed the innovative design for our new high school, a vision brought to life by the voices of our entire Brunswick community.
Experience our virtual tour, narrated by BHS students Anderson Mitchell and Addison Ivory. They are two of the many voices who helped shape this project from the start. See how our community's vision has created a school designed for the future of learning!

Early Site Work as the Groundwork for the Future School
The future of education in Brunswick is being built from the ground up, quite literally, as early site work progresses on the new high school. Since October 2024, construction professionals have been engaged in extensive earthwork at the site, a crucial phase that will pave the way for the construction of the new school building. This essential work, scheduled for completion in early May 2025, is often unseen but is a critical step in the overall construction process.
“Every new school sits on a solid foundation. The 'early site work' is actually the foundation’s foundation,” commented Scott Alleman, TDA project manager for the new Brunswick High School.
Brunswick City Schools: Investing in Our Youngest Learners
Significant progress has been made on the Applewood and Kidder Elementary School expansion projects. These additions represent an investment in the future of our youngest students, and Brunswick City Schools' commitment to providing students with the best possible learning environments.
January 2025 Update: Brunswick Construction Update
Progress continues on BCSD construction projects. Since the last community meeting in October, significant strides have been made on the various components of the project, particularly when preparing drawings for the new high school.
Over the last few months, architects have been finalizing the “guaranteed maximum price” (GMP) documents for the new high school and construction has begun on the new Maintenance Facility.
September 2024 Update: Brunswick Construction Update
While students and teachers were off for summer break, the design team for Brunswick's Construction Project was hard at work. Over the summer months, several major project milestones were achieved, ensuring progress before cold weather sets in.
Site improvements at Kidder Elementary School were completed over the summer and have been in use during the new school year. This site update included expanding the parking lot's capacity and reorganizing it so traffic associated with the elementary school was taken off surrounding city streets. Site updates to Applewood Elementary have begun, and the team estimates they will be completed this winter.
June 2024 Update: Brunswick Construction Update
In early April at a Community Construction Update meeting, ThenDesign Architecture presented the preliminary schematic design for the new Brunswick High School. The new 302,000 SF school contains academic space designed for 21st-century education, a 1,000-seat auditorium, and a competition gymnasium that holds 2,000 spectators.
The schematic design results from hundreds of hours working with BCSD staff, architects, engineers, and construction professionals. The interior layout is tailored to the operations of the district and how it can suit the needs of Brunswick City School students.
A visual preference survey was launched online with Brunswick City Schools to gather input from members of the community regarding the exterior design of the new 9-12 high school. The survey launched May 10th, 2024 and remained open for 40 days. It was distributed through the district’s school newsletter, during an in-person community event, through a hardcopy flyer, and listed on the district’s website and posted through their social media to encourage participation. There were 1,119 respondents, which included community members, parents, students and district staff.
Brunswick High School Senior Seminar Presentations
Seniors at Brunswick High School presented their design ideas for the new high school to administrators at BCSD and representatives at ThenDesign Architecture as part of their Senior Seminar class project.
The 12th-grade students chose which areas they wanted to create, including how to best convey those ideas. Some students created physical dioramas made of cardboard, wood, and lights, while others utilized software tools to create a computer-animated presentation.
Community Construction Update - May 1st
On Wednesday, May 1, Brunswick City Schools hosted a Community Construction Update event in the Student Center at Brunswick High School. With 70 around in attendance, ThenDesign Architecture and Hammond Construction provided an update on the design process, interior layout and construction timeline for the new school. Afterwards, the community participated in an exercise designed to gather input on the exterior design of the building.
Brunswick City Schools March and April Construction Update
At the end of January, the design team completed preliminary schematic designs for the new high school. These documents are the culmination of months of work, and 100+ hours from over a dozen team members. The process included reviewing the new high school’s “program of requirements” (a list of necessary spaces to be included), engaging with groups of district staff to understand their needs, and developing floor plans to incorporate these spaces which conform to square footage requirements. This effort was a significant milestone in the design process.
February 2024 Update: Brunswick Construction Project
Progress continues on the Brunswick City Schools Construction Project. Significant milestones were met during the design process in January, with all aspects of the project moving forward.
On September 20, 2023 another significant milestone was reached for our community as BCSD took another step forward in shaping the future of our district! Students, parents, community members, faith leaders, city officials, teachers, and administrators attended an Educational Visioning Session hosted by ThenDesign Architecture at the high school.
In early 2022, the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC) informed the Brunswick City School District about an opportunity to receive state funding that would cover 39% ($42.6 million) of the cost of a crucial component of the Master Facilities Plan - a new high school. The OFCC stated that the high school needed costly repairs, but the cost of renovating and upgrading the building to meet OFCC standards exceeded 66% of the cost of constructing a new facility. As a result, the OFCC would only provide funding for new construction.
In August 2022, the BCSD Board of Education voted in favor of pursuing a ballot issue to help fund the implementation of a plan. In May 2023, the community's voters approved the construction bond. After receiving a credit upgrade from Moody’s Investment Services in July, BCSD sold the construction bonds in a favorable market, saving taxpayers an estimated $1.5 million in interest. You can read more about this by clicking HERE. By implementing this plan, BCSD remains pursuant to our strategic direction, which values providing an optimal learning environment and transformative learning experience for our students in a safe and fiscally responsible manner.
Funding for the bond issue will go toward:
Construction of a new high school that features a 1,000-seat performing arts center, a multipurpose field with synthetic turf, tennis courts and a full-size baseball field.
Additional classrooms and site improvements at Applewood and Kidder Elementary Schools.
Building a new maintenance facility and board of education office in the area where Willetts Middle School is located.
The demolition of the current Brunswick High School, Towslee Elementary School, Willetts Middle School and the existing maintenance building.
In the spring of 2023, Brunswick City School District (BCSD) stakeholders, including students, parents, staff, community members, and administrators, collaborated to rethink and redesign the BCSD Strategic Plan. This plan, named the "Journey to 2028," outlines the strategic priorities of our school district, including academic success, student support, communication, community engagement, and finances and facilities. The construction project outlined on this website aligns with BCSD’s strategic priorities to ensure every student's success through a challenging curriculum, relevant experiences, and meaningful relationships while nurturing their love for learning.
