Today marks an exciting step forward in the construction project. If you have driven by the campus lately, you might have noticed the installation of construction fencing around Willetts Middle School and Towslee Elementary. A few weeks ago, the abatement process at Willetts was completed, which involved the removal of hazardous materials from the building, and the interior demolition of the building began. Today, the exterior demolition of Willetts has started. We expect it will take three weeks to bring down the entire building. The demolition crews will continue to work on-site to sort, clean, and remove the school's foundation.
Willetts was closed permanently in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, after the opening of the new Brunswick Middle School. Unlike Towslee Elementary, the closure of Willetts was not accompanied by any formal event or building tours due to the strict guidelines that were in place at the time from the Medina County Health Department regarding social gatherings. Over the last few years, the HVAC equipment from Willetts was removed and repurposed across the district to save repair costs. Unfortunately, the building has been empty for several years, and without airflow, it was not safe for visitors to tour.
Jeff Henson, a BCSD alum and local photographer, took a series of incredible pictures of the inside of Willetts this fall and shared them with the district. Use the link below to take a digital walk through the building. Thanks, Jeff, for sharing your talent with us!
