Handwriting Without Tears is a research-based handwriting program used in kindergarten through third grade to help students develop legible handwriting, proper letter formation, spacing, and overall writing fluency. The program utilizes developmentally appropriate instruction, multisensory learning experiences, and consistent practice to help students build strong handwriting habits that support literacy development.
Strong handwriting skills allow students to focus more on communicating ideas and less on the mechanics of writing. Through engaging activities and structured instruction, students develop the fine motor skills and automaticity needed for successful written communication.
Program Components by Grade Level:
Kindergarten – Kick Start Kindergarten: Kindergarten students use Kick Start Kindergarten to develop readiness skills that support handwriting and literacy development. Through hands-on, multisensory activities, students build fine motor strength, learn proper pencil grip, practice letter formation, and develop foundational skills needed for writing success.
Grade 1 – Letters and Numbers for Me: First-grade students use Letters and Numbers for Me to strengthen manuscript handwriting skills. Students learn correct letter and number formation, spacing, capitalization, and sentence-writing conventions while developing greater writing fluency and independence.
Grade 2 – My Printing Book: Second-grade students continue refining manuscript handwriting through My Printing Book. Instruction emphasizes legibility, consistency, spacing, and writing fluency while supporting students as they engage in increasingly complex writing tasks across content areas.
Grade 3 – Cursive Kickoff: Third-grade students are introduced to cursive handwriting through Cursive Kickoff. Students learn cursive letter formation, connections between letters, and strategies for developing fluency and legibility in cursive writing.
Why We Use Handwriting Without Tears
Handwriting remains an important component of literacy development. Research suggests that handwriting instruction supports writing fluency, reading development, spelling, and overall written communication. Handwriting Without Tears provides a consistent and developmentally appropriate approach to helping students develop these important foundational skills.
What Families Can Expect
Students may bring home handwriting practice activities, writing samples, or classroom work that demonstrates their progress. Families can support handwriting development by encouraging proper pencil grip, providing opportunities for writing at home, and celebrating growth in both handwriting and written communication.
