The Bellefonte Area School District English Language Arts (ELA) program is designed to help students become confident readers, effective writers, critical thinkers, and skilled communicators. Through meaningful experiences with literature, informational texts, writing, speaking, listening, and language, students develop the knowledge and skills needed for success in school and beyond.
Our ELA curriculum is aligned to Pennsylvania Academic Standards and reflects current research and best practices in literacy instruction. In addition to building foundational reading and writing skills, students are encouraged to analyze complex texts, communicate ideas effectively, think critically, and engage thoughtfully with the world around them.
As part of the district's curriculum review process, ELA was among the first content areas to complete the revised curriculum development process introduced in 2024. As a result, the documents available within this section provide a comprehensive picture of the ELA learning experience from kindergarten through grade 12.
Below you will find:
Instructional Frameworks that outline the instructional practices and learning experiences that guide literacy instruction.
Vertical Standards Alignment Documents that show how ELA learning progresses across grade levels and identify priority standards.
Curriculum Storyboards for each grade level and/or course that illustrate the learning journey students experience throughout the school year.
Together, these resources provide insight into what students learn, how learning develops over time, and the experiences that support literacy growth across Bellefonte Area School District.
