Specimen dimensions: 4¾ x 3¼ x 1½ inches (122x85x39mm)
Specimen weight: 40 ounces (1135 grams)
Collection: personal, collected from old chromite mine (black mineral at base)
Provenance: Yancey County, North Carolina (old chromite mine)
For reference: the U.S. penny is 0.75 inches [19.05 mm] in diameter.
Distinguishing Physical Properties:
Ignore the black minerals in this sample.
The first thing that I notice is the distinctive yellow-green (olive) color.
Even though it's a large sample, if you look closely it looks like a lot of small particles cemented together (not unusual).
If you could test this sample, you would find that it scratches glass (>5.5 hardness).
