What's Mansion Reading

   Escape from Mr.Lemmoncello’s Library

By M. The Great

Hello fellow Mansion students! Have you heard about our one school book, Mr.Lemmoncello’s Library? If you didn’t already know, this book is written by Chris Grabenstein, a writer who writes adult and kids books and started writing in 2005.

A cool thing about this book is it’s three things in one! Not only is it one genre, it's mystery, fantasy, and even comedy!

This book is about a kid named Kyle and he has to write a really good essay to visit Mr.Lemmoncello’s Library, kinda like what happened in Willy Wonka where the boy had to find a gold ticket to visit Wonka’s chocolate factory. Luckily for Kyle, he gets accepted into his Library and the Library is filled with magic and excitement.

Moving on from the book, Chris Grabestein, the author of Mr.Lemmoncello’s Library, is going to visit Mansion in a couple of weeks! When he visits, we're gonna know a lot about this amazing and wonderful author, and we may know why he was inspired to write Mr.Lemoncello's Library. So stay tuned for the next couple of weeks and listen along to your teacher reading this book. Before you know it, Grabestin is going to be at Mansion in no time.

Tom Angleberger: Visiting Author

By: Midz and Midz 2

You might know Tom Angleberger from the book series of The Strange Case of Origami Yoda, or any of his other books. Tom was born in Staunton Valley, Virginia in 1971. He is married to Cece Bell, in fact she is also his illustrator. They have raised 2 kids together. Tom has had a good education from going to the college at William & Mary. He has written over 30+ books! The genre he likes to write in is children's fiction.

You may be wondering how did Tom Angleberger get into writing? Well, when he was a kid he wrote an essay about the American flag and that is when it all started. When he got older he started working for a newspaper. He eventually broke off and started writing books on his own.

He was so fun and so nice. We drew pictures together too. We were lucky to eat lunch with this amazing author.

A Long Walk to water

By: Busy Bee, Miss.Daisy & Ms.Macaroon

In 6th grade we just finished an amazing book called A Long Walk to Water. This book taught us so much about South Sudan, and we realized that we are very lucky for everything we have. This book was about Salva and Nya's lives. They were in two parts. One part talking about Salva's life during the war and Nya's daily life.

Salva was having a normal day at school when there was a bombing. He ran away leaving his village and was on his own in different refugee camps. For a very long time Salva was pushing through hard challenges until one day he was able to go to America and live with a family.

Nya's story is about a young girl who lives in a village with not a lot of water, and the water they have is very dirty and unsanitized. Then one day a life changing event happened; a well and a school got built so Nya can have clean water and  education. This book is very good and definitely recommended.

         What’s 5th Grade Reading

By: Midz 2

This year at Mansion, 5th grade is reading The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamilo.

K is a fifth grade student who will be sharing about The Tiger Rising.

So, K. What did you think about The Tiger Rising?

It was sad and it was emotional.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Sistine because I like seeing her emotions switch.

What was your favorite part of the book?

I liked Willie May’s reaction to the tiger.

Would you recommend this book?

Yes

Who would you recommend this to and why?

I would recommend this to second graders because it was short and not too long.

If you wrote this book, would you change the ending and why?

No, because I like it the way it is.

Did you like the movie or the book more and why?

I like the movie more because it shows what's happening and it shows the characters' emotions.

If you could meet a character, who would you meet and why?

The tiger if it wasn’t dead.

Thank you K! Now you know that fifth grade was reading The Tiger Rising and you should try it for yourself as well!

Hatchet

The sixth grade is reading the book Hatchet and in my opinion it is a good book. It is a book about a boy who gets stranded in the Canadian wilderness and he has to figure out how to survive by himself in the wild. Although the book might seem a little bit scary, it teaches you about survival and gives you ideas for if you're ever lost in the wild. It also shows you how hard it is to survive in the wild by yourself. I think you would really like Hatchet and I think you should read it if you get the chance.

Conferring with Characters!

By: Crazy Cat Person

We all still remember the book Flora and Ulysses, right? And we all remember which character is best, right? No? Well that’s okay, because we’re about to go over all the characters again. First off, we have our main character: Flora Buckman. Flora is a ten-year-old girl who is really into comic books and superheroes. She is a natural-born cynic and her favorite superhero is one that her dad made: Incandesto.

Incandesto’s alter-ego is a man named Alfred T. Slipper. The Last name comes from the fact that he slipped into a vact of a cleaning solution called “Incandesto” (This is how he was transformed into a superhero.)

Flora’s father works at a store and has a phrase that he always says rather than holy cow: Holy Bagumba.

One day, Flora found a squirrel who got sucked up by a vacuum cleaner. She gave him CPR which brought the squirrel back to life and–miraculously–gave him superpowers. She named the squirrel after the vacuum cleaner that had sucked him up: Ulysses.

Flora also comes across a young lad of the same age named William Spiver. He is my favorite character as he almost perfectly portrays me. William Spiver is “hysterically blind” and is, quite frankly, a huge nerd.

Flora also has a mom in this book. Flora’s mother is a romance novelist and ends up turning into “the arch nemesis” of Ulysses as she tries to get rid of Flora’s squirrel later in the book.

So which one is best? The nerd, the hero, or the “villain?” You decide! Vote via https://forms.gle/vFDAe2JNmM9a8YBF7

The Exciting Vocab in Mansions One School One Book

The Exciting Vocab in Mansions One School One Book

All about Mansions exciting one school one book vocab. First, every day when you walk in the building, and the morning announcements go on there is a different word from the book that is chosen and spoken about. Next, they cite the sentence and chapter that the word is in. After that, they will define the word by saying what it means and the different ways it can be used.. They also give some examples of sentences to restate the meaning. Lastly, an example of this is when the morning announcements were on and they said “profound, Profound meaning a person or statement having or showing great knowledge or insight.” So this is all about the exciting vocab that we are learning from Mansions one school one book.

‘’The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane’’

I have been reading many books in school. But the one I am talking about today is ‘’The Miraculous  Journey of Edward Tulane.’’

In this book you learn about a life lesson which is don’t take love for granted. We learned this throughout the book but the most important part was Edward the rabbit who never loved his owner. He only cared about himself; he alway wore nice silk suits. And all he did was only care about himself, not his loving owner Abilene.

My class was so excited to read this everyday. We read one or two chapters everyday. We were always excited about the book.  I Have asked two people in my class to give a review in Edward Tulane.

Here is one.”Edward Tulane is very inspiring to read because it teaches you the understanding of love, loss, and hope. Most of all it teaches you about family. Edward goes through being found by a family who loved and accepted him,but then lost them in a tragic way. I definitely recommend’’ The Miraculous Journey of Edward. Another one is this ‘’Edward Tulane is an ispring book that teaches people to not take things for granted. In the book, many people go through hardships. The lesson we can learn is that our home is not where you live but the people around you.Over all, the book is really great and I love it.’’

Here are some of my classmates' opinions about Edward Tulane. One chapter Edward was thrown overboard in the boat they were on. We were shocked to see what happened. We all were mind blown.

For the past 2 months we have been writing RACE responses and doing projects and more with this. My favorite was writing a response on a huge paper with a couple classmates. We wrote it and then we had to grade the others on theres it was probably the most fun thing we did.

In conclusion I hope you read the book and you are interested in it just like me. I hope you enjoyed the book if you read it.

FLora and Ulysses

Before spring break, we watched the movie Flora and Ulysses and we got popcorn and water as a snack. Everyone enjoyed the movie but, some people said it was nothing like the book. I personally loved the movie and I actually almost cried at the end but I didn't. If you did not know, Flora and Ulysses was about a girl named Flora who found a squirrel sucked up in a vacuum. She saved him and then took him home as her own and named him Ulysses. Her mom did not like the little creature but her dad did so they hid it from her mom. Then, her and her dad, George, took Ulysses to the coffee shop and things got crazy. Ulysses flew across the room and bursted out the glass window then animal control came. I'm going to leave the rest for you to find out, but your not going to want to miss this movie
