Our Heroes Interview                                             November 17, 2023

                                                         By The Coolest Cat

Many students at MAS know that Mr. Schiavo takes everybody out for P.E. and health but a few things that not many kids know about are some of these questions. I picked to interview Mr. Schiavo because I wondered what he was like as a P.E. teacher and kid.

Q: When did you start teaching at Mansion? What was your first year like?

A: My first year arrival was in 1996 at the High School. But my first year at Mansion was in 2008. It was definitely different coming from the High School to elementary, but it was a good change for me.

Q:Why did you want to come here?

A: It’s a long story that had to do with coaching, but also P.E. at the High School was sometimes like pulling teeth, and it wasn’t very fun.

Q:Did you always want to be a P.E. teacher? Yes- why did you want to be a P.E. teacher. No- what did you want to become?

A: No- I always thought I would be a professional athlete, but I also knew I also wanted to coach. So teaching was the obvious profession to pursue to be able to coach. Yes, I have always been very fortunate enough to have been coached and mentored by some of the greatest men coaches, women coaches, and teachers in our area . Men and women that I can truly call friends and I know I can always reach out to them anytime I need advice to have something I want to talk about.

Mr. Schiavo may not have been the pro athlete that he wanted to become when he was younger but his coaches made an impact on him so he decided he wanted to be a coach also. These are a few questions and answers that Mr. Shiavo has answered for me.

Me- What’s every grade doing in art?

Mrs.Ottiano- Classes are using all different art materials, some are using paint, yarn, clay, neon markers, etc.

Me- Is art important in your life?

Mrs.Ottiano- Art is important in my life because I grew up with art all around me. My father was an art professor at a college. So he taught me to appreciate art at a young age.

Me- Do you think we should still have art as a special?

Gym in quarantine

By:  A.C.

Gym this year is definitely different than before. This year for gym the students that go to school do work outs and run around for the period while the other students join a meet and do the work out. But how do some students feel about this? Some students from Mrs. McCurdy's class feel that there's not much they would change and enjoy how it's going so far. Some also feel like they don't want to continue with the work outs and feel that everyone should get to do the same stuff. They also feel that is a group thing and that they got the same amount of attention from Mr. Schiavo. Now because of Covid there isn’t much we can do about this problem but hopefully it can change in the future.

Gym

By Mr MARVEL

This year is another fun year of Gym. When we  go outside everyone plays kickball or man on ground. But if we stay inside sometimes we play battleship. Here's how battleship works: there are two teams on each side and there are three pins. But you can't cross sides there are a ton of dodgeballs. You have to knock down the other team's pins with a dodgeball. There is a protector for every pin. There is also a trash can on each side. If you get a dodgeball in the other team's trash can all your sides pins come up. Or dodgeball

Steam in Quarantine

By: Mrs. Macaroon

Steam is totally different online than in person. When you're online you have to just sit there and watch and take notes but in school, in some peoples opinion steam is amazing. In 5th grade you get to use the 3D printers at the end of the year and you can make whatever you want. You also get to use little bits and let your brain run wild and create a piece of art that involves engineering. That is the main reason why I love steam, because whatever I want to do, I can do. I also love it because Mrs. Martel is amazing and helps out with anything you need.

Jump Rope For Heart

AS we know Jump Rope for Heart ended and the coordinator of it for Mansion is our very own Mr. Schiavo. Today, I will ask Mrs. Schiavo some questions about it.

Over 5 thousand dollars

The weirdest non-graded quiz EVER!

All about one of the strangest yet funniest quiz ever. So when our health class started it seemed like it was going to be a normal health class, that’s when Mr. Schiavo asked the boys to go on one side of the room, and the girls to go on the other side of the room. Then, he pulled out a giant book with a bunch of random questions in it. So a bit into it the boys were down 2-3 and it wasn’t going well because only one person on that team could answer and it was always the boys who were split with 2 answers. As a result, the boys team captain got under a lot of pressure and often got the wrong answer which meant the question was passed on to the girls and they could get a point. Because the boys kept getting stuff wrong, a couple of them started complaining and because of this, Mr. Schiavo took a point off of the boys' score. Right near the end, it was 4-5 the girls had a 1 point lead on the boys and if they got it right, they won, if the boys got it right, there would be a sudden death question. The girls wind up getting it right and winning 4-6. Although we didn’t win and it was the strangest quiz ever, we all enjoyed it and hope to do it again.

Let’s Make Some Noise

In honor of the advanced band and Mrs. Moore we wanted to write about the band picnic on April 27th. The students are required to bring a brown bag with their lunch, their music folder, and their instrument. When the bell rings the band members will go down to the lunch room to be separated into their groups including the starwars team, french dance team, let's go band team, and the aruba tuba team. And then we will hop onto the bus arriving at the Audubon Highschool auditorium. Once we were at the auditorium we sat down and listened to two songs the senior high band performed for us including skydive and a march. After that, we hopped back onto the bus to go to the cherry hill park. When we arrived at the park we ate our lunch and had free play for about 15mins. Once our 15mins were up we gathered back into our groups on the basketball courts and played fun relay races. Then, we left and we all had a fun time.
