Rabbet
A shelflike joint sized to match the workpiece that fits into it; European form is "rebate". A two-sided trench cut on the edge of a board.
Rabbet Joint
A very basic joint for box building, the rabbet joint is an improvement over the butt joint for strength. It adds extra gluing surface and protects against racking.
Rabbet Plane
An edge plane for producing a rabbet
Rabbet-and-Dado Joint
By locking the rabbet in a dado, the strength and protection against racking found in a rabbet joint are improved.
Rack
A twisting action of a frame that can loosen joints
Racking Force
In woodworking, this term typically refers to a twisting force on an assembly, such as a door, cabinet or chair. Racking forces are those that press on your projects at angles other than 90°.
Radial-Arm Saw
A power tool that consists of a motor and blade that are suspended above the table from an arm that pivots at the rear and upon which the motor slides
Rail
The horizontal member of any frame, such as a door, window or face frame.
Rail-and-Stile Bit
A router bit or matched pair of bits used to form mating edges of door rails and stiles
Raised Grain
A lifting of grain on the surface of a board usually caused by the application of water or a water-based finish
Raised-Panel Door
A frame-and-panel construction door of which the panel has a raised profile
Rake
The angle of a cutting surface relative to the center line of the tool
Random Orbit
The eccentric, swirling motion of a tool such as a disk sander designed to minimize the visible pattern of sanding scratches
Rasp
Is a long, flat or curved steel tool like a file but rougher. Used for removing wood on curved surfaces.
Ray Flecking
A desirable pattern on the surface of quartersawn lumber
Reciprocating
A back-and-forth motion as with the blade of a reciprocating saw
Relief Carving
Carving style that is partially three-dimensional as seen from the front
Relief Cut
A kerf cut on the hidden side of a board used to relieve internal stress on the visible side to prevent splitting or cracking
Resaw
To cut wood into thinner multiple, often matching, pieces
Resin
Thick sap or pitch deposits sometimes found in lumber
Reveal
Sides of surrounding frame exposed by a panel or member set in from the outermost plane
Rift Sawn
A variation of quartersawn lumber sawn at 30° to 60° to the board's surface, producing vertical grain but no ray flecking
Rift-Cut
Wood, including veneer, cut at 45° to the growth rings (also “rift-sawn”)
Right angle
90° angle also called "Square"
Right-Tilt
Referring to the direction a table saw blade tilts when moved away from perpendicular to the saw table (see “left-tilt”)
Rip
To cut wood with the grain
Rip Blade
Table saw or handsaw blade designed for cutting with the grain
Rip Cut
A cut parallel to the grain of a board.
Rip Fence
The movable guide on a table saw that’s parallel to the blade against which boards are referenced when making a rip cut.
Riving Knife
A thin piece of metal behind a saw blade that prevents wood from touching the rear of the blade and possibly causing a kickback; unlike a splitter, which is fixed, a riving knife moves to always keep the same orientation with the saw blade
Robertson Head
A type of square-drive screw
Root
The portion of a screw length below the head that has threads on it
Rotary Tool
Small handheld electric tool that spins a variety of cutting, grinding, sanding, polishing, and other specialty tips; often used for hobby crafts (often called a dremel tool, Dremel is a brand)
Rotary-Cut
Lumber that is cut & not surfaced
Rough Sawn
Unsurfaced cut lumber
Rough Turn
To bring a rough blank into a balanced, round shape on the lathe
Rough-Cut
To cut to an approximate length that is somewhat longer than an exact cut
Roundover
A bit or cutter which cuts the corner off the edge of a board, giving it a rounded edge; A convex edge profile
Router
Power tool used primarily for cutting edge profiles and mortises
Router Table
A table to which a router is mounted inverted with the bit coming up through the surface; the workpiece is moved against the stationary bit
Rubbing Out a Finish
The process of using ultrafine abrasives to produce a highly polished surface
Runout
The degree to which a rotating tool wobbles as it spins; an undesirable characteristic
Ryoba Saw
A Japanese saw; a two-edged saw
