Hello, my name is Marcus Sullivan. I have a beautiful wife named Courtney and 2 amazing little girls, a 9 year old named Molly and 5 year old named Spencer. I graduated for Sumner High School and currently live in Enumclaw. For 8 years after high school, I was an Aircraft Electrician for the US Air Force, during my time in, I traveled to 54 different countries, was deployed for over 1000 days and met some incredible people who have shaped me into who I am today for better or for worse, but there is nothing like being home. I enjoy woodworking, home renovation, building custom motorcycles and spending time with my girls.
Currently I teach STEM Construction and Woodworking at Olympic Middle School in Auburn. STEM Construction gives students an insight as to what industry is looking for out of our up and coming graduates.
The goal of education is to encourage students to develop an ability to problem solve while creatively seeking answers. I act as a facilitator and coach to encourage students to advance their knowledge and ask “why and how”. Because when, we as a society, stop asking, we stop growing and evolving.
I became a CTE Instructor because while I was in the US Air Force I was getting kids straight out of high school who couldn’t read a ruler or follow simple instructions and commands because they lacked the 21st Century Skills required to complete the task. In my class I insure that students learn 21st Century Skills. For a student to be successful in a career or post-graduation education, as well as life, they need to have the ability to think critically, problem solve, have reasoning, appropriately analyze and interpret, and synthesize information. I insure this by having the students work in diverse groups, independently, or collaboratively with another class, depending on the project.
In my classroom every student has a voice and will be able to have their ideas respected because any idea can spark creativity. I believe without these skills and environment a student will have a difficult time becoming a productive member of society.
