Paint Thinner
A standard solvent for oil-based paint and varnishes; also called mineral spirits
Painter's Tape
Adhesive paper tape (usually blue) used to mask areas adjacent to surfaces being painted and then be easily removed without leaving any residue
Palm Sander
A small, handheld power tool used to smooth wooden surfaces
Panel
A flat rectangle of wood often constructed by gluing several boards together side by side
Panel Saw
A woodworking machine used for cutting large sheets of material to a more manageable size
Particle Board
Similar to Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF), this engineered product is made using waste wood and adhesive pressedunder heat and pressure. The bits of wood used in particleboard are larger than the fine fiber in MDF, making the panel less consistent. Like MDF, particleboard is vulnerable to moisture. Otherwise known as chipboard is made of lots of bits glued and compressed together. Available as a sheet material like flooring and also covered with Formica and used for worktops.
Parting Tool
A chisel with a V-shaped cutting edge; also called a V-tool
Pawl
The toothed component in a ratchet or a table saw's antikickback device
Penny
The specification designating sizes of nails; also called pennyweight. Abbreviated with the letter d; for example, 10d finish nails.
Phenolic, Phenolic Resin
A resin or plastic used in coatings or adhesives that becomes permanently rigid when heated or cured
Phillips
A type of screw invented by Henry Phillips in the 1930s, with a cross- shaped indentation in the head; also the cross-shaped screwdriver head used to turn it
Phillips Head
A type of screw head with a X shaped groove in the head. Special screwdriver bits are used to wind them in, not to be confused with Pozi shaped bits which are similar.
Pigment
The component in paint, stain, or other finish that provides the color
Pigtail Scratches
The curlicue scratches sometimes caused by handheld electric sanders; sometimes called swirling
Pilot Bearing
A bearing mounted on a bit that guides the bit during a cut
Pilot Hole
A small hole drilled in your work that is intended to guide a fastener. The hole will ensure the fastener is driven in the desired direction and clears some waste wood to prevent your work from splitting when the fastener is driven in place.
Pilot-Bearing Guide
A free-moving bearing attached to a router bit that allows the bit to follow the shape of an existing edge
Pin
The part of a dovetail joint whose dovetail shape is on the end of the board and fits between the tails; also a screw or dowel used to reinforce a joint
Pin Knot
A very small knot
Pin Nailer
A powered tool that drives tiny, sharp, nearly invisible pins into small moldings and other thin furniture components to provide mechanical fastening to supplement gluing
Pipe Clamp
A clamp made by attaching a fixed jaw on one end of a length of steel pipe and an adjustable jaw at the other end. One end of the clamp jaws is attached to the head of standard metal pipe or bar stock while the foot is cam-cleated or slipped into various slots (also called bar clamp)
Pitch
In saw blades, refers to the number of teeth per inch. For lumber, refers to thick sap or resin deposits in the wood
Pith
The central core of a log or tree branch
Plain Sawn
The most common type of cut lumber; shows pronounced growth rings running almost parallel to the board's face; wood cut tangential to the annual growth rings (also called flat-sawn)
Plane
A hand tool used to carve thin slices from a board to straighten or square a surface or edge
Planer
A power tool that planes lumber
Planing
To flaten lumber to the desired thinckness; part of the milling process
Plug
A round piece of wood glued in place over a countersunk screw to hide the screw head
Plumb
Plumb is the term used to describe something that is perfectly vertical. A 'plumb bob' is an old fashioned heavy tool on a piece of string used to determine plumb.
Plunge Router
A router with the motor mounted on spring-loaded columns
Plywood
Wood sheet made of individual layers of thinner wood, glued together with the grain of each layer running 90° to the adjoining layers
Pneumatic
Air-powered; used to describe air-driven tools
Any hole or socket of various shapes that fit mated joint parts
Pocket Hole
A pocket hole is drilled at an angle to allow a butt joint to be screwed together. Can be used to fix two pieces together flush, at angles, end to end, curved and many more. Extremely useful type of fixing. An elliptical slot bored at an angle in the face of a board, through which a screw is driven to secure that board to an adjacent piece of wood; sometimes called screw pocket. popular alternative to doweled, mortise & tenon or other joining techniques. A jig creates a pocket hole with a special step bit that leaves a pilot hole as well as a shoulder for stopping the pocket screw at a pre-determined depth.
Points Per Inch
A method by which saw blades are classified (abbrev. “ppi”), based on the number of tooth points in a 1′′ span
Polyurethane
A type of flexible plastic used in sheeting, expanding foam insulation, and glues; often called simply poly. Any of a variety of polymers used in rigid (as in Plexiglas), foam (as in Styrofoam or foam rubber) or resin (as in finishing products) forms
Polyvinyl
Relating to a polymerized vinyl compound, such as plastics or resins
Polyvinyl Acetate
The adhesive ingredient in white glue; often called PVA glue
Positive Stop
A preset adjustment on a tool, usually set for common angles such as 45° or 90°; also called a detent
Pot Life
The amount of time that glue can be exposed to the air and still be workable; also called working life or open time
Predrill
To drill a hole before driving a nail. This decreases the chance of splitting the wood.
Press Fit
A description of two mating parts, as in a joint, where parts fit snugly without requiring force to mate
Proud
When one piece protrudes above another it is referred to as 'proud'.
PSI

Push Stick
A safety accessory used to push a workpiece through a cutting edge, keeping hands a safe distance away
PVA
Polyvinyl acetate; adhesive ingredient in white glue
