Belt/Disc Sander
This type of sander combines a disc sander and a belt sander in one unit. They typically consist of a flat worktable with a sanding belt mounted on one side and a sanding disc on the other. The ability to switch between the two also makes it easier to work on different types of surfaces and shapes.
Spindle Sander
An oscillating spindle sander is a table mounted power tool that uses a vertical reciprocating motion and a rotating sanding spindle to sand curved shapes.
Operate only with instructor’s permission and after you have received instruction.
Always use proper eye protection.
Remove jewelry, eliminate loose clothing, and confine long hair.
Make sure all guards are in place and operating correctly.
Never sand another student’s project without the instructor's permission.
Stop the sander before making any adjustments.
A maximum of ¼” of material is to be removed at one time. If more material must be removed use a saber saw or bandsaw first.
Do not exceed recommended operation pressure as it will greatly increase tool wear.
If you notice the wood you are sanding turning brown or burning you should:
Keep the wood moving
Don’t push so hard
You might need to replace the belt, disc or spindle sleeve.
Material being sanded must be flat on the table.
Wood and plastic can be sanded on this machine
Hands and fingers should be kept at least 1” inch away from the belt/disc/spindle
while sanding.
Belt/Disc Sander
13. Make all adjustments except final belt tracking with the power off.
14. Make sure there is adequate strong tension on the belt and that it is not torn.
15. When changing belts, make sure the new belt runs as arrow indicates.
The table should be adjusted to within 1/16” of the abrasive belt.
The belt must be re-tracked if the angle of the basic machine is changed.
You must sand on the downward rotation of the disc sander.
If there are two people using the belt/disk sander never start or stop the machine until both are ready.
Spindle Sander
20. The work should revolve around the spindle with a sliding motion.
21. Always stop the machine before placing the spindle through the project to be sanded.
When changing drums never tighten them with a wrench, hand tighten only.
Use an insert that comes to closest to the spindle without touching it.
If sanding as inside circle, pick a spindle with a minimum of ½” diameter smaller than the object being sanded. A spindle to close to the hole might catch the project and start spinning it. If this happens, hit the stop button and stand back.
