The Drum Sander consists of an abrasive-wrapped drum, positioned above a flat conveyor. The gap between the drum and the conveyor belt below it is usually controlled by a handle on the side that rotates to raise or lower the drum; a few sanders raise or lower the conveyor belt. The drum spins at a constant speed, whereas the conveyor has a variable speed control.
Operate only with instructor’s permission and after you have received instruction.
Remove jewelry, eliminate loose clothing, and confine long hair.
Wear eye protection when using this machine as required in this lab.
Do not look into the throat of the sander; the board may kick back and you could be hit in the face.
Take no more than 1/64 of an inch per pass unless cleared by your instructor to take more.
The maximum width for stock to be run through this machine is 36”.
The minimum length to be run through this machine is 9”.
The minimum thickness you are allowed to sand a board down to is 1/8th or .125 with instructor supervision.
Never place your hands inside the conveyor belt system or between the board and the table. It is dangerous.
The finer the abrasive belt the less stock will be removed. Usually, an 80 grit belt is installed.
Before your first pass, you must check the thickness of your board with a Digital Caliper. Then type in that reading into the digital display panel.
Make sure the machine has come to a complete stop before leaving the machine.
