Using AI in School
Your teacher will use the following symbols to let you know how you can use AI in class:
Recommended: Use teacher-provided chatbots to assist learning; use AI as part of your product development.
Your teacher will always let you know when AI is part of the assignment and tell you which tools to use.
Permitted: Help to make your work efficient; personalize learning and tutoring; assist with revising writing.
Your teacher may not provide you guidance, but you can use tools that you know well to help you with your work.
Restricted: Do not use AI in your assignments at any stage. If you have a specific need - check with your teacher.
If in doubt, ask your teacher. There may be negative consequences for using AI without permission.
Positive Use of AI
Aiding Creativity
Use generative AI for inspiration across diverse subjects, including writing, visual arts, and music composition.
For example:
Using Canva to create an image which you can describe in detail in a piece of writing.
Using SchoolAI to generate an outline of an essay, which you can then write yourself.
Providing Securly Chat with a first draft of your writing to receive feedback before turning it in.
Collaboration
Generative AI tools can work in group projects by giving ideas, helping with research, and making connections between pieces of information.
For example:
Asking Securly Chat to recommend a list of websites where you can find accurate information.
Asking Securly Chat to divide up a group project and produce a task list for each group member.
Using Canva to collaborate on a document.
Communication
AI can offer you real-time translation, personalized language exercises, and discussion partners to help you learn.
For example:
Asking Securly Chat to speak to you in another language so that you can practise your conversation skills.
Using SchoolAI to work through a math problem by discussing each step in the process.
Chatting with Securly Chat to clarify your position on a controversial topic for debate.
Content Creation and Enhancement
AI can help create personalized study materials, summaries, quizzes, and visual aids to help you organize your thoughts and content.
For example:
Asking Securly Chat to provide ten questions to practise for a quiz.
Using Canva to create a visual representation of a concept or vocabulary word to help you understand.
Using SchoolAI to summarise a conversation with a partner to add to a presentation.
Is it OK to use AI for this task?
Apps You Can Use
This is like ChatGPT, but for school. You can talk freely to the chatbot to get help with school work, offer study tips, provide facts, or inspire creative ideas.
It has some filters that make certain topics off-limits, since this is a school app.
Adobe's graphic design suite for students, which now contains the Firefly AI technology to generate images from text.
Free graphic design suite for staff and students, which includes "Magic Studio" capable of generating images from text, or presentation decks, as well as editing photos, helping with writing, and many other features available through various built-in apps.
Your teacher may create chatbots on SchoolAI that allow you to use AI for specific topics in class, or to help you practise certain skills, or to speak to an imitation of historical figures.
What Not To Do
Bullying/harassment
Using AI tools to create media for bullying, harassment, or any form of intimidation is strictly prohibited. You must uphold values of respect, inclusivity, and academic integrity at all times.
Dependence
AI tools do not replace learning or work. Teachers will clarify if, when, and how AI tools should be used in their classrooms, and you are expected to review outputs generated by AI before use.
Plagiarism and cheating
You must properly cite or acknowledge the use of AI where applicable. Existing rules related to academic integrity and plagiarism will continue to apply.
