Developing the Young Workforce

DYW
At Kemnay PS, our goal is to furnish every child with skills essential for learning, life, and work, empowering them to pursue any pathway or career of their choice.
Throughout their journey at Kemnay PS, these key skills will be interwoven into their lessons, ensuring familiarity with the terminology and the ability to articulate and apply them to their own experiences.
We will ensure the integration of language through daily discussions into lessons. 'All About Me' sheets, termly targets, and reflection tools will be utilised across all age groups to foster self-awareness and goal setting.
In the upper school, discussions about Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) will have a career focus, while in the middle and lower school, the focus will be on skill development. We'll gradually introduce DYW lessons and topics, potentially involving collaboration with external professionals.
To support staff, we'll provide resources and training to ensure they feel confident in using and integrating DYW skills and language seamlessly into the classroom experience, rather than treating it as an additional component.
In the upper school, we will initiate discussions about various pathways into job roles, exploring qualifications and further education options. Students will be encouraged to relate this information to their own aspirations as they transition to the academy, fostering proactive thinking about their future steps.
We will organise a celebration day dedicated to showcasing skills development, providing an opportunity for students to share their progress and emphasise the importance of these skills. Success stories of skill demonstration will be highlighted within classes and assemblies, promoting a culture of recognition and encouragement.
Additionally, each class will have a dedicated classroom display featuring skills relevant to the level of the students, serving as a visual reminder and reinforcement of their ongoing learning journey.
Building on the foundation laid in previous years, we will further expand our efforts to provide practical experiences and insights for our students. Upper school children will have the opportunity to visit workplaces, gaining first-hand exposure to different job roles and environments, thereby enriching their understanding of potential career pathways.
We will organise a job fair, inviting external professionals to our school and facilitating school visits from various experts. We will seek support from our parent and local business communities to provide pupils with meaningful interactions, gaining valuable insights into various career options and potential avenues for further education or training.
By fostering these connections and experiences, we aim to empower our students with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions about their future endeavours, building on the continuity of our previous initiatives.
Embedding Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) into our daily culture at Kemnay PS is an enriching journey, and we're dedicated to continuing to promote these essential skills whenever possible. Our use of 'All About Me,' 'My Goals,' and 'Meta-Skills Self-Evaluations' facilitates ongoing self-awareness and goal-setting, with termly targets collaboratively set with the children.
From Primary 4 to Primary 7, our classes engage in enterprising topics that intricately link with DYW skills. In Primary 7, we further emphasise jobs and careers, preparing students for their transition. To enhance this preparation, we host mini-job fairs where parents from the Kemnay PS family share insights into their professions. They explain their chosen career paths, how to enter their field, and the essential skills required to excel. These experiences provide invaluable real-world connections, inspiring our students and reinforcing the relevance of their learning journey.
