Performing
National 4
Candidates must provide evidence of musical performing skills on their two selected instruments, or instrument and voice, Grade 2.
Added Value Unit
Candidates select, with some support, two or more complete pieces of music for their two contrasting instruments, perform the agreed music, and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses.
National 5
Candidates must perform on two instruments or voice for a total of 8 minutes. this is externally assessed by a visiting SQA examiner. Grade 3

Composition
National 4/5
This assignment requires candidates to showcase their abilities in music composition. They should make use of at least three of the following musical elements:
Melody
Harmony
Rhythm
Timbre
Structure
The candidate's creative and effective development of various musical ideas will demonstrate their understanding of these elements. Finally, candidates must reflect and evaluate on their final piece.

Understanding Music
National 4/5
As part of the course, candidates must recognise level-specific concepts in various styles and genres of music. To assess this element, candidates sit an external assessment during the main SQA exam period. This is worth 40 marks. The exam tests skills in understanding music concepts, music literacy, and music analysis. These are continuously developed and assessed throughout the course to ensure the best preparation possible.
