Welcome to our interview process

Beginning in 2017, our program decided to separated interviews (done remotely via video) from your in-person visit to our program, with the goal of addressing the scheduling and financial challenges you experience during interview season.  We were one of the very first programs to do this, and we trained countless programs how to do video interviews at the onset of the COVID pandemic.

We transitioned to virtual applicant visit events during the COVID pandemic, with applicants noting they were still able to get a good sense of the program through conversations with our residents.  As a result, we will continue to hold a number of virtual applicant visit events, to keep trying to help mitigate financial challenges for applicants.  

To allow you an opportunity to visit our campus, meet program leadership and residents, and explore Phoenix, we also will host an in-person Campus Visit after our program rank list is locked, and before applicant rank lists must be certified.  This allows applicants to decide if an in-person visit will be helpful and feasible as they consider their rankings, without the decision having any impact on our program rank list.

1.  Schedule your remote interview half day through Thalamus.  

   • • Join us for your video interviews on the half day that is most convenient for you.  

     • If you have applied to our Primary Care Track or Integrated IM/Geriatrics Track, our goal is for you to interview with one of our Primary Care Track APDs (or Geriatrics faculty, if applicable), so certain half days have been set aside specifically for these interviews. 

2.  Complete the Pre-Interview Information Form/Survey in Thalamus as soon as you schedule your interview half day.  

   • • Here, you can provide additional information that allows our conversation during the interview to focus on getting to know you better.  Please complete it as soon as possible (at at least 1 week before your interview) so that we have time to review your responses. 

     • The survey form can be accessed in the "My Surveys" section of your Thalamus dashboard and/or by clicking on your scheduled interview date (click on Survey "edit answers").  

3. Attend a virtual applicant visit day event for an opportunity to learn more about the program and to meet our residents.  This will allow you to get to know our program and community better by talking with our residents.  

4. Optional in-person applicant campus visit event: 

   • If visiting our program in person will be helpful as you consider your rank list, you are welcome to attend our in-person event!

   • This event will be held on February 20th, 2026 -- after we have locked and certified our program's rank list (we are participating in the NBME's voluntary program rank order list pilot), but before your rank list must be finalized.

   • Additional details will be communicated in the future.
